Cheers Hattie.

They seem quite settled, the are 'contained' at the moment in the enclosed run and house, the other birds have the old hen hut and free range. I'll probably let them all meet up tomorrow night, and then Wednesday will be the day to see if they do a runner when I open the doors.

"I am off out in a wee while to collect some shavings for the hen house and three eggs from a friend to start a trial run of the incubator."  smile

I hope you got the eggs today. Have you already preheated the incubator so you are ready to go?

good luck.....I HAVE FINGERS CROSSED FOR YOU......isn't this exciting.......!!!    ya

I can't wait to send you some of my girl's eggs.

wave  Hi Nadine.  Yes all set and the eggs are in the incubator.  It turns the eggs automatically and lets you know when to fill up with water, so it should be plain sailing.  I didn't even have to heat it up first.  It is almost up to temperature now.  It is indeed exciting.  I do hope I am successful.

wave  TA¦..Wherever I find one on a forum that I like I just save them in a safe place. I think they cheer things up & sometimes diffuse tension.  Mind you too many of them, jumping around, can make reading the posts uncomfortable, especially for those, like me, who have eye problems. It was terrible when I was suffering from double vision after one of my operations¦¦..!!!!!    big_laugh

wave  Found out tonight that one of the eggs in the incubator is from a Sussex and the other two are from a  Black Rock.  Don't know what the cockerel is though.  Will be interesting. whistle

When you receive your postal eggs let them rest large end up for at least 24 hrs . As a matter of interest you are not allowed to advertise fertile eggs , they have to be described as believed fertile .wave

wave  Oh I am so excited.   magic     I looked at the incubator this morning and one of the eggs has a wee hole in it and I can hear cheep cheep from inside the egg.  I actually saw it trying to chip a wee bit of the shell away.  ( Did I say I was excited? wink ) It says it can take up to 12 hours for the chick to get out of the shell and I must not in any circumstances disturb it.  So all I can do is wait for it and hopefully the others.  ( Did I tell you I was excited big_laugh  )

I am now not very happy that I have to go out this afternoon and then again this evening.    yell

Updates and photos will follow.

wave Ooooooooh Danuta.....I'm so excited for you!!  I love watching them as they emerge from the shell but I hardly ever get the chance as my broody hens are so protective. In fact they often seem to hatch overnight.

Sorry you have to go out but at least it stops you being tempted to open the incubator.

Best of luck for a successful hatch.

When you've got them under Midge's lamp corrugated cardboard is the best initial flooring, serves two purposes the ridges stop legs from splaying and they also make food move around as the chicks walk about which encourages  them to start feeding ,sprinkle food onto cardboard .Third porpoise they can't eat it and impact their gizzards.Another trick is to put a smartie in their food bowl which they will peck at but they don't really need food for a couple of days the yolk sack will keep them going .wave

wave  The box that the incubator came in transforms into their home for a couple of weeks.  Holes are already there for the low wattage bulb and air holes.  They have thought of everything.   welldone

I shall take your ideas on board about the corrugated paper for later Seth.  Thank you.

I know it can still go horribly wrong, but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

You can't open the lid as this creates low humidity which will cause dried up feathers sticking to the shell which prevents the chick from getting out of the egg.  So I will not be opening the lid.  eeek

wave  Well not much progress but I can see its wee beak moving.

I am off out soon for an afternoon of pampering, well some of it anyway.  I am having a facial, my eyebrows waxed    eeek   and my eyelashes tinted and all within walking distance of my house, not bad for the middle of nowhere eh?  laugh

( I'm not sure if I mentioned I was excited!!!!!!!! big_laugh  )

Oh Danuta, such excitement!  I'm on edge now until I see a photo.  I hope you had a lovely pamper afternoon.

I'll try that again!

wave Well the hole is not that much bigger, but I think a crack is appearing in another egg.  I just hope all is okay.

I had a lovely afternoon.  The facial was so relaxing - the waxing was not, and I now have lovely dark eyelashes with no need for mascara  ( not that I ever wore any  big_laugh  )

Don't think the AGM of the Hall Committee will be quite as enjoyable.

Oh just heard a wee cheep again.  magic
