Ok i need some help. I have my 2 chickens in a pen at bottom of garden. We live in a suburban area with neighbours all around. We did have 3 but one very obviously turned out to be a cockrel so we got rid of it, and apart from them never having laid an egg yet have had no problems. Well this morning they have been making loads of noise. And from observing them it looks like one of them is trying to mate/jump on the other one!!! Im getting concerned now that one or both could be boys but they have non of the signs of being a cock like the spurs on legs and all that - which the one we got rid of had. I thought at first they may be trying to lay an egg which was why they were noisy but now this. Is this normal behaviour for young hens?? Is it just one just showing whos the boss?

Hi

Don't know if I can help, but I have just googled your Welsummers and there is no way you could mistake a hen for a cockerel, especially as they are a year old.  It says they lay about 160 eggs in a year.  I would have said the same as you that they were about to lay or just laid.  I know mine make an awful racket after they have laid.  They always sound so proud of their achievement.  Maybe your hens had a wee disagreement about something.  I know mine squabble sometimes.  How much space do they have?

Lots of hens haven't started laying yet as the weather has been so cold.  I would have thought they would have started to lay last Autumn, but you may have just missed the time before they would naturally have stopped.  Hope you get eggs soon.    Smile

yeh thats what i thought - i would def know by now if it was a male and im sure they arent. They dont have an aweful lot of room, but enough for just the 2 of them, and their indoor bit is raised about the run with a little step ladder thing. It is pretty slimey and messy at the mo due to the weather but theres not a lot i can doa bout it until the weather dries up. Have had a check and theres no eggs!

Sounds like they are sorting out the 'pecking order'. Birds get very argumentative in the Spring, they argue about mates, territory and who gets fed first.
