I had a duckling hatch yesterday. It is now in the brooder and doing well. Seems like it will be an only child!

Hi Aly,

I was just visiting the US Backyard Chickens site so I had a peek at their duck-hatching problems posts & came across this interesting info.....seems as if you are certainly not amongst the minority having problems hatching in an incubator. Post #6 was where it really got interesting. It might be worth trying.

I now see why my ex-neighbour was so pleased I had a good broody hen to sit her eggs; even so only 4 ducklings hatched out of 6 eggs.

Interesting stuff. Too late for these eggs but the dry method sounds like an idea. It had occurred to me that when hatched naturally the eggs are left for a time each day while the mum eats etc. eggs in an incubator are kept at the same constant temperature. I have another egg that is showing signs of pipping but I suspect the duckling may have died. I will leave it a while as I know it can take days. It would be good to have a friend for my little darling!

We had to ditch 14 of the 24 eggs after candling, they had obviously not fertilised. Mind you they didn't cost much and so not too worried. Should be this weekend that we start to see action, or maybe Monday. Better go and get some chick food then as the shop is shut on Mondayswhistle

I ditched the rest of the duck eggs and have started again with 5 of mine. I didn't candle the original lot but thought they were fertile, sadly not. My sole duckling is doing well.

I'm glad I candled ours with so many that weren't fertile. It might have been our fault as it was a cold day when we picked them up and they had to stop in the car while we shopped. I did take a flask with some hot water and put the eggs on a a towel hot with a water bottle underneath it and then put a towel on top of the boxes and put the lot in an insulated box but the temperature still dropped to about 16C eeek

All a bit of a gamble really! My broody hen has thrown out one of her eggs today so I guess she did her candling!
