I bought 3 chickens last august (maran, light sussex, orpington) no problems with the maran or sussex, but the orpington has yet to lay. my husband says he once heard her trying to crow! she doesnt show any other male behaviour. She is 10months old ad doesnt even squat whe i go to pick her up. could she just be a late developer or do some chickens just never lay?

Hi Jane, welcome to the forum. I can't answer your question but someone will soon enough, just wait a while.

I'll try that again!

Hi Jane and welcome. This is actually the second time I have replied to you so I hope I have better luck posting this time. I don't think you are doing anything wrong as the other two are laying fine. I was interested in what your husband said about it trying to crow. I looked up Orpingtons and the hen and cockerel are very similar but I reckon if it was a cockerel he would have been very interested in your ladies if you know what I mean. It also said they get broody very easily so it might want to sit on the other hens eggs! I love my hens ( and ducks ) but I am no expert and I don't know if some hens just never lay. It does sound as if you love her anyway, so why not just wait and see. Perhaps someone else with more knowledge will give you a better answer. Please keep in touch and let us know if there are any developments. Good luck.

Thanks for the information Danuta, I was a little worried that Jane would have no reply.  Big_Hug

Sorry I was so long getting back to u. Have bin having trouble with my password. Thank you for your replies. I have an update. Still not lying, but is now squatting when I go up to her. She is also  being very vocal, making squawking sounds as if she has laid an egg. Have spotted her in the nest box a couple of times. So fingers crossed she may lay soon. Then my horrible husband and sons can stop eyeing her up to put in the pot!  Will keep you updated. JaneSmile
