Not too bad; none appear to be laying as yet, though the oldest seems ready enough; I wondered if they perhaps needed a crock egg to give them the idea of where... dont think they are laying when they are out and about!

Overall i love having them though; they are lots of fun!

wave  Are their combs nice and red Shelley?  That is a sure sign they are ready to lay.

yes and the biggest has a gap between her pelvic bones big enough for three fingers...

just had a fright as I looked up to see two large dogs running amok in or garden (must have jumped the fence; chickens nowhere to be seen; after a long search we finally found them hiding in the bushes over the road from the house...PHEW!!

One of them is still doing runny brown poos...any ideas??

Hattie is taking a sabbatical presently and will be back when she can.

I'll try that again!

Possibly down to what she is eating! When they free range they get lots of worms etc. I am sure Hattie will suggest something. Meanwhile try someone like the Omlet website or backyard poultry. If her comb is red and she is perky it is not a serious problem I would have thought.

Image EnlargerThese are two of our chicks. We ended up with four in the end which is not what we were expecting as we started out with 24 eggs. 14 weren't fertile and the last ones we probably made the mistake of taking the first ones out too soon. We live and learn!Image Enlarger

How lovely! I left my duckling in the incubator until she was completely dry and fluffy. She was the only successful hatching from 15 eggs.

Just got a challenge for the chooks yesterday; his name is Muppet and he was rescued by us from the SPA; over the last three months we have lost 3 cats to the road outside the house and hubby was devastated when the last was Squeak the kitten we hand reared; this little chap was a way to get happier and for me to get some exercise

How lovely! My puppy came from Liberties des Chiens who work with Spa in Brittany. Hope Muppet has a long and happy life. My cats have never bothered the chooks but have been pecked when getting too close!

I'll second that, Muppet looks like my old dog George. If you train him well he will eventually come to realise the chickens belong to you & are not to be eaten or chased, but never trust him till you are sure he knows this. Cats learn this lesson much more easily. Remember dogs are essentially wolves.....!!
