I'm in two minds whether to see the film (even if it does feature the scrumptious Daniel Craig), as apparently it contains a rape scene, which totally puts me off. I'll finish the book first and then decide. Does anyone know if the film closely follows the book?

The book contains a really horrific rape scene. The Swedish film did a toned down version of it, I expect the Hollywood version will tone it down even more.

Mine is a 2010 Quercus imprint, so may or may not be the same as the one you have. Mine starts with the prologue on page 1.
There's a sexual assault on pages 198-199, the rape is 224-225, and some rather disturbing detail of the aftermath is on page 226 if the really squeamish want to avoid that too. Personally, I felt that these scenes were absolutely vital to the understanding of the characters involved, but I understand some people prefer not to read this sort of thing. For which reason I will add that there are some pretty nasty things from page 394 to 410 as well, but if you don't want to read those (violence rather than rape), then you might as well give the book to someone else right now!

I would suggest that you wrap it up for someone's Christmas present for next year or donate it to a charity shop….you'll never remember what you're not supposed to read….

I've just had a quick look in my copy, TA, and the page numbers clearly aren't the same as the ones in Lyn's copy – different publishers I suppose. But I guess we'll be able to tell from the build up to the relevant scenes what's coming.

Don't worry about it Lyn, it's not the end of the world. I just prefer not to read/watch stuff involving violent sex crimes, a personal thing.
