hi barbara have grave doubts about undefloor heating.i have yet to see a good one i am in the flooring game and they aint what they are suposed to be ,please check it out thoroughly before agreeing
sorry to be a damp squid but good systems are like rockinghorse s**t
and i am yet to see one that dosent cost a fortune to run
but i dont like seeing people ripped off ,if you have the plumbing in the room stick with the radiator and if you dont seriously think about putting it in

Thanks, MOS, I am glad to hear that! My first reaction was to go with replacing the radiator–easier to dry tea towels on, for one thing but underfloor warmth does sound tempting.
They also suggested insulation under the vinyl, which does sound like a good idea to me.
Maybe when it is finished there won't be a sloping floor–one inch or more from one side of the smallish kitchen to the other, but maybe there will. And maybe there is a cellar or a hidden passage under the kitchen and maybe not. (Local stories suggest that there may be, dating back to the Napoleonic Wars or earlier.) Or maybe the walls will collapse when they take the kitchen out–who knows?

I agree that to replace the system that is in is silly, but I have an underfloor system, run by a heat exchange pump (aerothermic energy) and it is SUPERB and very cheap to run!
today I have picked around 3kg of blackberries and the same of wild plums. I have visited a friend and am now back home!!

some things I have been getting up to lately
also today I have cleaned the kitchen and done some remedial tidying work in the garden (it has been neglected for a wee while).
In a minute I'll be nipping out to ikea, foolishly the Sam suggested I go on my own,so I may be some time, to get more hooks for hanging things on a bar over the work top (pan lids, funnels, measuring spoons, etc.) and to some supermarche (or archfarchnad in you're that way inclined) to get what i need for red onion marmalade (apart from the onions of course) and green tomato ketchup which shall be made when I get back. The recipes I plan to use are in the jam/preserves/chutney place, for them what asked, and I shall update with the results when I done made them.
the Sam is not being idle either, he is stripping down the buggy and filling the little holes in the bodywork from where other people over the years have decided to put things in different places (some of these holes are actually quite big, one is about 2 inches diameter, many around 1 cm.see the ease with which i flip between metric and imperial! i'm so modern and cosmopolitan). Then he'll sand and prep the whole thing for the painting. It is a lot of work. Hopefully if it doesn't rain he will make good progress and we may get it all shiny and painted by the time we go off to the show (in three weeks we'll be there, but in two weeks we'll be in a field near Carlisle, so we're a bit pressed for time).
also this eve we are hoping to pop over that there bridge to watch the balloons glow at the Bristol international balloon fiesta and catch up with some lovely lovely friends.
that little lot should keep me out of mischief, eh?

HI shellyis your undefloor heating a piped one fed from an underground source or like a reverse air con unit
thats about the only type i have seen that are good if its like the one an aquaintance of mine as it was built into the house when it was built and the heat source was put in under the garden they recon the source should last ten years it like a huge compost bin full of pipes
his pump is like the gubbins out of a large fridge and the insulation under his floor is about 4 inches thick
but it does work better than the electric type

mine is the one that is like a reverse air con unit. It uses the differential between the inside and outside temps to run; Very very popular in new builds here in France (on my estate over half have it!) and pretty cheap to run. The geothermic units are more complex and require a lot of flat land
Today I have washed and cooked up 3.5kg of blackberries with 2kg of apples, sieving half way through, to make 26 pots of jam!! Rather yummy and the recipe I use always sets like stone (it is called blackberry and apple cheese on the recipe!)
Tomorrow wild plum and pear chutney!!

Weather here so vile that Andrew and I did the sensible thing and have achieved an afternoon nap under a woolly blanket on the sofa.
Did I mention the hot-water bottle we took with us?

Kate, I spent most of yesterday under a fleece blanket with my hottie too!
Today I've been watching my neighbour try to speed up my laptop, he says I've to buy more memory, I wonder if they sell the same things for brains?

Well TA, , we're off the sofa, but the rain is as heavy as when we first went there, so thinking of going back .
Time to reach for the Star Trek dvds methinks…
Sir has a hilarious laptop-only hilarious as it belongs to work, not him- the hinge went the other day so it can't be moved and is propped up on my dressmaking scissor box ( conveniently, just the right height and width and weight to support it), after the hinge went, the screen tried to fall off. It is still working, but we are careful not to make any sudden moves near it or sneeze whilst using it….if he had paid good money for it I think he would be less than amused.

I was just thinking of getting under my blanket again…weather report for Cranfield says that the wind is ENE so it's not likely to get much warmer is it?

Forgot to say – just as well that Sir doesn't own that laptop. I hope you won't need your dressmaking scissors before it goes back.

The rain here is coming from the NE-another very dark sky in that direction- and after being out there briefly I can testify that the rain is indeed COLD. My tiny hands are frozen.
I have managed to sneak my scissors out occasionally- but Sir has to be there to hold the laptop together, I'm hoping he will get the replacement next week as the joke is wearing thin now ( not least as he sneaks up here to use my computer instead….)!

I am sitting looking out of the window and I only see blue skies and sunshine. Three days in a row now, bl**dy marvellous. I would like to feel sorry for you all, but we are due a bit of sunshine after there were only two days in July and the first week in August when there was no rain at all.
So
( It will rain tomorrow now of course!!!!! )
