Kate, did you eat any of the crabs or did you throw them all back?
I can just picture Andrew dreaming up the patterns for his new bed of wool. Will you have to fight him for the yarn?

There was one crab large enough to eat- I was VERY tempted to take it home to cook, but I was staying with my sister and her culinary skills are, well…curious. Right flavours ( sometimes) but wrong textures…liquid hummus,'mashed' potato salad…a live crab would have freaked her out, thogh her salads usually abound ( literally in the case of the beetles in my dinner on monday night) with wildlife. I was dead proud as it was the first crab I have ever caught. It was a great afternoon, one of the other children on the slipway caught an eel and it jumped out of the bucket-hilarious! We did a crab dance to celebrate our catch…back home now, rather knackered after a week, first at my house, then at theirs, with two small boys!
Andrew just has to sit on anything to make it his- he's so HUGE removing something from beneath him is a challenge. If he sits on me of an evening my legs go numb after ten minutes or so.

So you are ready for a rest? Interesting comments bout your sister's cooking – the mind boggles. The eel must have been desperate to escape, wish I could have seen that.
I didn't realize that Andrew was so big, have you a photo of him that would give some sense of his size that you'd show us?

Oh yes, ready for a LLLLOOONNNGGG rest, but loads to catch up on in the garden- especially as it is raining at last, so it will be growing madly to make up for all that lost time earlier in the year with no rain at all.
When I've finished lounging around recovering from small persons I shall dig out a picture of the boy to demonstrate his remarkable ginger hugeness.

What a lovely turn of phrase, Kate. I know people like that (don't we all).
I wondered where you had gone to. Glad to hear you are taking a break (or being broken by littl'uns more like )
@ Elsa and MOS. You two crack me up. Was it something in the Cannock Chase water?
Oh, yes, I remember now. Gin.

I really don't believe that it was down to the gin. We identified that both are fathers had bikes so it could have been 'something like that' or maybe we just got separated at birth….
Fun though isn't it but not for the feint hearted….

There, there, on a serious note you really do need a break …..and it was our dads who had the bikes don't you remember, no you wouldn't. You weren't even a glint in his eye, the times I'm talking about.
As for bikes, I remember when you could cycle along the A5..We went to Boscabel House, four of us at the age of 10 and I don't think I even told my mum where I was off….saw the priest hole and everything and not in the least bit religious at the age of 10….
and I can feel a coming my way .

It's been a beautiful day, I've shut up that new groaning freezer by stuffing in loads of food, the breeze kept the temperature down to a comfortable level today, I had a pedicure and painted my toenails, it was a wonderful sunset and there is a new moon with its little facing smiling at me…..all's well with my world…… hope you all enjoyed your day………

Dug up potatoes in between showers and started on processing the humungous load of patty squash, and finishing off the carrots and sweetcorn, so not much of a rest but satisfaction in a job well done , so in a way with aching feet I have enjoyed my day. Yours sounded idyllic ep.

Joanna, what are you going to do with all your produce? Do you have a big freezer? Or is this also for 'bartering'? You mentioned that you dehydrate some things – is that how you manage to utilise everything? I'm intrigued, as I have trouble just from a garden !!!!! I'm rubbish at this self-sufficiency. A few extra courgettes and I'm stumped!
Daughter managed to collect a large amount from her allotment so that we could bring it to France to use while she was here with her family. Today, she and family went home – and we are left with two HUGE round green courgettes, each weighing about 3 kilos, and another long yellow one.
I think I'm beginning to look like a courgette …….. no comments, boys ….
Floating the boat – this morning 3 young red squirrels running around the field like mad things, just having fun – absolutely delightful.
Then this evening, having supper on the balcony hearing only the sound of the birds saying goodnight to each other, and watching the sun go down. Bliss.

Dealing with the produce has been a bit of a headache. We have a large upright freezer but not a chest freezer. I have been experimenting with different storage methods. Carrots, beetroot and potatoes will be down in the cool basements we have, although I have dehydrated some carrots, that wouldn't have lasted, for stock powder. I have been making jams and chutneys too as they use a lot of produce up but I need some more jars. Experimenting with bottling veg and fruit too just to see what it all tastes like. Some of the produce is for seeds for next year when we hope to have enough to sell. Tomatoes have been dried as some of them I have grown are a bit wishy washy fresh but are rather nice dried – got two jars stuffed full of them now. I think we have forgotten how to store stuff but they used to manage in the olden days so there are ways and means.
