Hi Suz, where have you been?

Los Angeles, Seattle and technically Oakland!

Are you sure you really want to know? OK.....

Work is still nuts. Too tired for catching up on the interwebs when I get home most evenings thumbs_down

Spent 4 days in Seattle for a friends wedding. Wedding ceremony itself was lovely. The rest monster and aargh.  It bloomin' poured the whole time we were there (and it's been grey in LA since we got back* - am depressed), the traffic patterns were "creative" and the people we had to interact with were appallingly behaved (including a thieving bridesmaid)**. Eeeft. Never going back. Also, trip went over budget so almost certainly now can't afford to go home at "the C word". Blargh. As you can tell I've had my grumpy pants on for a while.....

* I swear this has been the worst year for weather since I moved out here. Havn't put the AC on once, havn't worn flip-flops once and have drunk more tea than in previous several years combined. What-the-frell? Global warming my arse!!! smile    I don't know how Michelle lives as far North as she does......B vitamins? Sun Lamps? Prozac? LSD?

** except for a nice chap at a coffee shop who made me the hot chocolate equivalent of an espresso - HOLA!@!!!

The crummy weather has led to more cooking exploits though. Several attempts at each of the following: veggie shepherd's pie, veggie hot pot, broccoli soup, leek & potato soup, roasted vegetables, scalloped potatoes and Delia's Garden Macaroni (which is really mac "n" cheese with vegetables snuck into it). Not much baking though (note to self - bake yummy stuffs).

No time for sewing/crafts though frown  and not much reading either (just finished Mistress of the Dead by Ariana Franklin, which was set in medieval Cambridge, so enjoyed the "familiar" setting. Might read Ghostwalk by Rebecca Stott next, which is also set in Cambridge in past times. Homesick much? Nahhhhh).

Anywayyyyyyyy, back to the thread......what do folks have as "upcoming attractions"??????? Come on there must be something tantalising and salacious - I know what you buggers are like........wink

Egads - now I have to do maths! steam

You sound very much down in the dumps Suz and I'm not surprised after going through all that.  The thieving bridesmaid shocked me deeply.  I hope you manage to climb out of that pit of despair very soon.  Have some big_hug big_hug and kiss kiss and a bit of magic

I'll try that again!

BTW, whereabouts in Cambridge did you live in? Were they student days?

Suz, you had rotten weather after we had excellent weather most of those places. big_hug

Seattle, good weather, good drive to see Michelle, lovely weather and warm welcome there, good drive to Oakland, where it started to get hot, train to Santa Barbara. P got out of the train at San Luis Obispo for a "breath of fresh air" (while I sensibly stayed in the air conditioned and very comfortable train) to be hit by hot air like an oven. We discovered later it had been 111F (44C) in SLO that day. LA, hot and hot and hot, until the day we left for the airport when it poured! And poured.

Oh come on Suz, its not that bad!!!!

My summer was crap too, its gorgeous now, but it will start raining again soon, and then won't stop till June!

I'm sorry, that really stinks, especially since you probably would have had more fun going home that at the wedding!

You want to come visit me for "the C word"? I always have a full house, a couple more would blend right in! It would be cheaper than going home.....?

ToffeeApple, Danast, Kate, BrightSpark, Danny, DevonGarden & Michelle...

***UBER-HUGS***

You guys are awesome and have really cheered me up. Thank You for all the hugs & kisses & sparkles 🙂  I do believe that the folks on this site restore my faith in human kind!

BrightSpark, yes will definitely try that recipe - it looks scrumptious.

Danny - yes went to Uni there. It was a very convenient distance from home - far enough away to need to live there but close enough that parents could pop in for an afternoon. Oh how I miss the Belgian chocolate shop in the alley opposite Halfords, the M&S food hall, Galloway & Porter (among other bookshops), punting to high tea in Grantchester, Clowns coffee shop, the Eagle (only pub with a non-smoking room back then) and wheedling away time reading under a tree whilst listening to the cricket at Fenners (used to back onto my college). I know Scotsdales well and it always makes me smile when Fiona mentions it on her blog smile I brought back a couple of glass ornaments in my hand luggage from there last time I was home.

DevonGarden - am glad to hear you had good weather. I seem to have a very jaded picture of Seattle! I did hear it was lovely & sunny here whilslt we were away - Murphy's Law! big_laugh

Michelle - you're a sweetheart and I might just take you up on the offer - You have been warned! big_laugh   I lurve all things C wordy but my OH hates anything to do with C word with a zealous passion. Now to be fair, he did grow up in an Orthodox Jewish household, which especially banned outside influences (like TV) during December and then once an adult he worked in retail for 10 years. Poor boi.

Hmm, well it's still raining so time for more tea

 I wouldn't have offered if I didn't mean it! big_hug

One thing though, are you allergic to animals? I have so many that most days they outnumber the people most days!cat dog

punting to high tea in Grantchester

Yikes - on a student budget, Suz? ponder

Have punted to G'chester, observed Lord (Jeffrey) Archer's abode and had a beer or three when Fiona's bro paid a visit from Fielding, NZ, three or four years ago.

IMO, the first lesson taught to kids at school in Grantchester is "how to charge and bill tourists" wink

Only joking. It is a lovely experience and I would encourage any visitors to Cambridge to try the punts on a warm summer Sunday. A joy to remember. ok

Also furrywonders are valued and respected members of society! big_laugh medicine

Oh my goodness Suz- the Eagle...I remember that pub from my youth...some considerable time before yours...it had an AWESOME jukebox ....now lost in happy memories of lost weekends in Cambridge, many of them with bits missing................

Danny - oh no, punting was done on a student budget. The colleges all have plenty of punts which you can reserve/sign out for free. You then have to find 3 other people to divvy up the labour & foodstuffs. The deal was that those who have "poor technique" or are "just too wimpy" would provide the yummies. Clearly I was always in the "bring yummystuffs" camp smile  If you split the food with one other it was quite doable budget wise. Make your own scones, cakes, sandwiches etc. Get strawberries & other fruit from the market. Make up the Pimms inexpensively. Get other stuff from the Sainsbury's in the town centre. Possible something from M&S foodhall if wanted to really splurge. Then once actually punting stop somewhere along the riverbank. Et Voila! Alternatively, if lazy (or roll out of bed too late) get tea in the Orchard!

Also, I don't think those touristy punt services let you bridge hop along the river monster or go at night by candlelight for that matter....

Kate - but you can be so creative with your imagination filling in those "missing bits" wink
