After a conversation at the weekend meet up about Halogen cookers I gave mine a clean and did a rather good crispy crackling pork roast.

Thanks Danny and Fiona for re-invigorating my interest in these cookers.

Got to be my filleting knife.    Recently stayed with a friend and was given something I was assured was a knife – well it had a sharp blade but NO flexibility.

Failing is not a fault, refusing to try is

Whenever I hear the word 'mandolin' I always think of the narration in Tubular Bells… But the problem with kitchen mandolins is that I can never watch someone else using one because it always looks like they are about to slice the end of their finger off.

Visit my blog for food, drink, photography and hamsters.

Not if they used the proper finger-guard.

I'll try that again!

Not sure which gadget mine would be, but I saw lots that I can certainly live without, as well as some highly covetible ones here and here yesterday. Son and daughter were also there, and our chosen meeting spot was a kitchen shop.

We've recently bought an electric slicer, picked it up at a car boot sale for the princely sum of £2.00!!! eeek

It's magnificent, an absolute godsend.  We no longer buy those wet and often tasteless packs of sliced ham, instead we buy a gammon joint (when they're on special offer, Asda have been doing them at less than £4.00 recently).  Part boil it (keeping the stock, of course) then finish off in the oven.  Husband then slices it on our lovely new gadget and gets 30+ slices…..a huge saving on the prepacked stuff and tastes so much nicer.  And we can slice our homemade bread properly…..nice evenly thick slices (whether thincut or doorstep wink), rather than the thick-at-one-end and wafer-thin-at-the-other efforts with a bread knife aargh

Do you mean one of those with a circular blade Sue?  Like they used to have in grocers shops to slice the bacon, only not as big.

I'll try that again!

Lovely!  You can have bargain ham then.  I got some sliced Brunswick ham from the Co-op today, six slices for £2.00! surprised

I'll try that again!
