Doing absolutely nothing for it, we usually go to bed before midnight on the day.
Same here. Then get woken up by fireworks.
It's just a number anyway, isn't it? Doing the family history I'm reminded that new year used to be on Lady Day, 25th March. Then in 1752 the year got moved forward and people were very upset that they were robbed of 11 days from their lives. So, seems to me, the first of January doesn't really have much importance.

I agree with you Ruth, it is amazing to think of all the times that calendars have been altered. There was one just the other day where a country lost a full day. It might have been Papua but I'm not certain.

Samoa, TA.
May Fiona and I wish you all a very happy Hogmanay tonight and a glorious 2012.
You all have given us so much pleasure over the past few years and especially here on the forum since it started two years ago.
The highlights were undoubtedly July 23rd when so many of you made the trek to ours, and the follow-up with TA in Milton Keynes. Meeting Michelle and Dan in the middle was a huge bonus.
Love you all to pieces.

For some people it is many hours past midnight- one of my ex colleagues in Hong Kong wished me a happy new year via facebook, but we had nearly 8 hours to go at that point!

I text two of my children when it turned midnight here in Latvia but was praying they didn't return the favour two hours later . thought a text to my daughter in Oz may have been a little out of order

Well, we had a fabulous time at our friends'. They cooked us a gorgeous roast beef dinner, the wine and G&Ts were in plentiful supply, we stood outside at midnight with glasses of champagne watching the fireworks display in the distance from Weston pier. We then played (drunkenly, badly and with much utter hilarity) various games on their son's Xbox (do you know how extremely difficult – and very funny – it is to try and do ten-pin bowling on the TV, when you can see about 20 pins and none of them will stand still, and your actual real arm will not co-operate and co-ordinate with your virtual arm on the TV? ).
I had a king-size hangover (never used to get those, must be getting old! ) and a thirst to match this morning, and haven't bothered to measure my blood glucose levels today – but it was worth it, every minute of it. I thoroughly enjoyed it all (even if some bits are a bit hazy ), bless our lovely friends

Glad to hear it Sue, every once in a while does you a world of good!
I'm relatively clear headed today, we walked home from sons (couple of miles) at about 3am this morning, passed lots of people who all wished us happy new year, funny isn't it how everyone is so sociable on new years eve.
