Deborah, Dowager Duchess of Devonshire died this morning.  How sad, I was very fond of her and her attitude to life.  RIP Deborah. peace

I'll try that again!

I saw this on the news, but I don't really know much about her.....well, nothing at all, really.  She'd reached a good age.

I have all of her books, she was rather funny too.  I am still missing 'In Tearing Haste' - letters between herself and her dear friend Patrick Leigh Fermor; I must put it on my wish list.

I'll try that again!

I join in your sentiments. Such character, and dignity. She didn't marry to be a duchess - that was just her husband's hard luck that his older brother died. I think it mostly down to her that the death duties were paid off, and Chatsworth was saved for the family. The Duke was famously not the best of husbands, but she stuck to caring for Chatsworth, so that we could enjoy it, and even licked him pretty much into shape.

She tried to tell us she was the stupid one of the family. Who was she trying to kid?

It is gratifying to know that you have a similar opinion to mine, Jean.  She most certainly was not stupid and was strong minded enough to put Chatsworth into good order.

I'll try that again!
