Oh kate, I am sorry about your lack of sleep, but I cannot stop laughing at your post. Shagging hedgehogs indeed!!!! Never knew they were noisy, but then when I think about it why on earth would I have done. Shouting owls eh
Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight.
Maggenpie it is always disturbing and I think a little bit frightening to hear drunks outside your house. Not that there is ever anybody outside my house, but I will be listening out for those hedgehogs.

OH grabbed the torch, we quietly walked down the lawn, looking, listening and….oh….right …..shagging hedgehogs!!!!!!
Opps… sorrry, we hopfooted it back to the kitchen sniggering as we went. I guess you learn something new everyday then?!!!!

The noise that Hedgehogs make when 'courting' is unmistakable, prolonged and very, very loud. Astounding that such a small beast can make so much noise for so long AND run around in circles at the same time. If you hear them, go out with a torch and watch them dancing , it is hilarious and rather sweet. The sound is a sharp snorting snuffling- rather like a puffing steam train chugging up a hill but with bronchitis thrown in and more than a touch of the pig.
Even rooting around in the garden they make really loud piggy noises!
Fairly quiet last night- owls went to bed reasonably early, too chilly for hedgehog fun.
Bin men arrived around 7am, recycling day so plenty of emptying of boxes of cans and plastic bottles into big collection wheelie bins- that woke up the cock who started crowing, which alerted the Red Kites who started to whistle ( they have really loud whistles and sit on the top of trees so the whistle carries as far as possible) so it was rumble, crow, whistle, rumble, clatter, crow, whistle, rumble, clatter, crow, whistle … then the lorry arrived to empty the collection bins and reversed down the street making that super beep beep noise…by this time I was up and getting the first load of washing on the line…no point in staying in bed.
I think an early night tonight.

MOS I'm fascinated to read about your herbalist, and especially that she cured acne through diet. I'm of the opinion that a lot of today's ill health is diet related.
i was amased too maggenpie ,the diet she gave him was draconian, and the desision to folow it took some sole seatching on his part ,but the acne was so bad he would have skinned himself if it would shift it ,his back was 90% scabs, some of them bigger than your thumb nail and deeper than the skin it realy was horendouse ,but within the week you could see the difference ,he still has and probbably will allways have the scares on his skin but at least its skin ,i wouldent like to describe the before picture it would turn your stomach ,he relapses now and then but goes back on the list whenever it starts to flare up again ,guess he will always have to watch what he eats in the long term .

So that is what they are. Is it only Kites who make a whistling sound or to me it sounds like a high pitch "Hugh"?
The things you learn on this forum, I never knew that hedgehogs made such loud noises too, guess that is what comes from being a heavy sleeper.

Okay now I know what I am looking for I can see if they fit the profile. They fly around us a lot and make a right noise.

Kites whistle too- but they sound more like school boy whistles, the Buzzards do a rather smaller , squeakier whistle- if you go to the RSPB website they have the calls on there, but the Kite wouldn't work for me today!

Thanks for those Kate, just been listening and not quite sure but I think they sound more like a buzzard than a Kite but then again the osprey sounds familiar too and I think I saw one of them the other week (we have loads of different hunting birds around here ). Do any of them fly around in pairs from time to time?
We have a lot of spotted eagles around us but the RSPB site doesn't have those calls as they don't live in the UK but the site does have white tailed eagle calls and the sound of those is exactly what we have heard in the forest, it sounds like we have the jungle next door at times. Fascinating and not quite ranting and raving really is it
