When on holiday in Corsica a few years ago, we had hired a villa, as there were eight of us – hubby and I and my Mum, but also five younger members – all students at that time, and a little noisy at times, particularly when they were in the swimming pool.
Anyway, one day I heard some gunshots, and this Corsican neighbour had decided he didn't like the young'uns loud laughter and had decided to take some shots at them.
His wife had come out and started berating him, but after that we found a 'house diary', and in it, several other people had come across his bad behaviour.
Also in the more hilly or mountainous regions when we were sightseeing, we came across individuals sitting at the roadside, cross-legged, with a gun across their lap. I would like to think that it was for the wild boar or deer, and not for unsuspecting foreigners!!!

Here is some serious food for thought…………….
|
|
The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, but one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases.
A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E. A billion Pounds ago was only 13 hours and 12 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
Value Added Tax
Income Tax
Cigarette Tax
Alcohol Tax Corporate Income Tax Unemployment Tax Alcohol License Tax Food License Tax Road Tax
Vehicle License Registration Tax Vehicle Sales Tax Petrol/Diesel Tax Inheritance Tax
Building Permit Tax
Marriage License Tax Inventory Tax Luxury Tax Property Tax National Insurance Tax Local Taxes Workers Compensation Tax Dog License Tax
Hunting License Tax
Fishing License Tax etc, etc…
STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?
Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago… And our nation was one of the most prosperous in the world.
We had absolutely no national debt… We had the largest middle class in the world… And Mum stayed home to raise the kids.
What happened? Can you spell 'politicians!'
I hope this goes around the UK at least 100 times
What the hell happened?????

apparently wasn't actually a car park, but a bit of waste land USED as a car park by DVLA employees. I hope whoever owns it clamps them all, and charges massive amounts for release.

And working families lived in crowded insanitary tenements, one family to a room sometimes
Overflowing cesspools, disease and vermin in the overcrowded cities
No indoor plumbing for the working classes
No electricity
Hot water had to be heated on a gas burner or on the stove
If you were really poor you went to the workhouse
No maternity benefits
In 1909 Lloyd George introduced some taxes in order to give those over the age of 70 a pension for the first time
VAT introduced 1973
Income Tax 1799
Tobacco tax 1604
Alcohol tax 1690
Window tax 1696
Eeee those days were grand weren't they

Sorry, Rae, because they're DVLA employees, or because they're parked on someone else's land and not paying for parking there?

Oh yes. People forget what taxes go towards. Too many people in the country now, too many not working and not paying tax, is the problem, not the tax system in itself. Although higher earners obviously should contribute more :P

if you watched that programme with Kevin Mcloud in it where he was in Indian, the slums turn over more than a billion dollars a year just in the one in the wasteland of Mumbai. If they paid tax on that the would have sewage works, instead of behind every shot of film, there being a child or adult coping a squat using anywhere as a toilet.
And now I have to give up most of my chocolate needs and loves. As I wont buy Nestle on principle and now I cant buy cadburys as they are sending the jobs to Poland from a British factory. I am voting with my money. I am walking away from both.

That seems a little harsh. DVLA has never seemed a particularly satanic organisation to me. What did they do to you?

they're parasites of no perceivable benefit to motorists, pettyfogging tinpot hitlers.
Despite the fact that they are entirely funded by motorists (and potentially tax paying pedestrians and cyclists also) they have abominable standards of customer service because they know that nobody has a choice but to jump through their hoops and put up with their incompetence to own or drive a car.
They're evil.

I'm quite calm Danuta, that was quite a laconic rant. And the boy isnae back quite yet, ETA midnight or thereabouts.
Is past my bedtime really, but I'm sitting up to wait for him, doing some crochet and watching an awesome film called Dean Spanley. I recommend it. It's a bit odd, but in a good way.Like all the best things of my experience.
