One year we were in America and bought each other the same type of chocolates…
It was a shame they weren't very good!
I will make chocolates, probably using the damsons that are still in gin (of course I kept them deliberately) in co-op fairtrade chocolate that I got on special offer. I will chop the damsons, mix them with the chocolate, and drop them onto a plate. I may coat them in chocolate when they have set if I have the time or inclination or they really look too messy to be romantic. Even better than bitter cherries in chocolate!
And I will make a card.
But it is the little, everyday things that add up. Not sure if selling my dead lawnmower (taking it to the local repairer, negotiating, and giving me the money) or offering to spread manure in the raised beds since I won't have time for a few days count as romantic, but definitely thoughtful!

He doesn't like having his picture taken, so I have no pictures of him, let alone of us together. Also i'll be getting up early on sunday morning to go toc hurch, so he'll probably have gotten up before I get back. Plus, and my bad for not mentioning this before, my friends who are coming for dinner are staying voer night as they live in Bristol, so would be a bit rude if we were to ignore them by staying hidden in our room all morning.
making sweets is the favoured plan, but finding a way to get him out of the house while i do it so they can be a surprise is the tricky bit. Am also considering tryingt o get hold of an England rugby shirt to be delivered by this saturday for him (as shops tend not to stock them in cardiff and might be nice if eh ahd it before the big game).

Given the circumstances, Rae, I think the rugby shirt is the most practical and achievable solution. And probably the most welcome. Although I loved the "on the pillow" suggestions. (yes, I am a soppy old-school romantic).
I think I will adopt an on-the-pillow approach this year. Maybe a Valentine's Day mini-stocking, like the Christmas version.

We were watching out Frasier DVD box set and the Valentines Day episode from season 6 just came on. It suddenly occurred to me that there are only 10 days left to think of something special. We've already got a bottle of fizzy wine in the house, courtesy of the Home Bargains shop
I might have already mentioned that I'm not terribly romantic… I should probably try to think of a romantic meal to cook.

I like your thinking Kate, but unfortunately the schedule between now and kick off is hectic, so no time for me to model it for him :(
I think I'll finda way to amke him some fudge and truffles and a card to leave on his pillow on the sunday morning when i scamper off to church early.
On a slightly unrelated note, one of the things I got for him for christmas was membership to a thing called Mr & Mrs Smith, which specialising in boutique and luxury hotels at the best rates, and little treats for members like free champagne on check in, or late check out. You cabn have a look at them here http://www.mrandmrssmith.com/
Have just had a lot of fun looking at places in New York for our next pre-Christmas getaway, something which I hope will become a tradition.

That's a great site, Rae. Thank you.
I was especially struck by Hotel Pulitzer, Barcelona, Spain – doubles from £86/night and close to Plaça Catalunya
That sounds like a really good deal.
I forgot to mention Barcelona in my list of favourite cities on another thread. It s probably top of my list for a revisit. It's not really good form to mention ex-relationships but this is apposite. Maybe 15 years ago, my ex and I booked into the Hotel California on the Ramblas. First morning, in a packed breakfast/dining room, we realised that it was all guys. A gay hotel. She was the only female. One of my best ever one-liners ensued: "You are the fish in the bicycle shed".
If you don't get it, I am not gong to explain!

Hello everyone,
This is my first post! I'm addicted to this site and can't wait to try the raspberry vodka recipe once the summer comes along and I can get my hands on some lovely raspberries!
I felt that I had to comment on this subject. I am a total Vally Day hater and PDA's (public displays of affection) make me cringe. However, there is a place in my heart for romance that comes about from real directional thought. Now don't get me wrong, I'm into flowers (any other day than Vally Day or my birthday), Champagne (actually I prefer Prosecco) and if anyone appreciates a box of Prestat Truffles then it's me. But I get more of a kick out of giving than receiving.
My hatred of Valentine's Day did not prevent the actions of a certain person last year (our first Vally Day together). I thought I had explained rather well that V Day was not to be celebrated. But ohhhh no!
As many of you will recall, last February was utterly freezing. I did not have working radiators in my bedroom and getting into my frozen bed each night was a truly horrific experience. This particular Vally Day I was instructed to stay away from the bedroom for an hour. Visions of scattered rose petals, smelly candles, laid out lingerie, a long night of passion in the aforementioned freezing bed - the gag reflex was on red alert! As the inevitable call beckoned me to "come up", I began preparing to fake my look of surprise followed by pleasure in order to camouflage my distaste. But it wasn't to be. Upon opening the door, first came relief followed by a pang of disappointment - the room was unchanged. Shock horror.
I was asked to get into bed (more shock), and after a few "Whys?" I reluctantly did. I felt warmth like nothing else – almost hot on the toes and soothing, comforting heat right the way up to the top of my head; both mattress and duvet were so cosy! "AN ELECTRIC BLANKET!!!" I exclaimed. I'd never been so thrilled and surprised!
This year, Valentine's Day is going to pass by unnoticed and I'll most likely be with my single girlfriends. But that didn't stop me going ahead and booking the most unromantic gift I have ever given: football tickets.
And though it's rather a cliche that my boyfriend likes football, he is a rare visitor to a live match. And though he thinks I thoroughly disapprove, I'm game to see what all the fuss is about.
All I know is that to him, it's going to be as good as the electric blanket…
Hoorah for Romance!

That's a brilliant gift of him for you – he got it totally right – blimey! Has he got any brothers??!
Love the fact that you're giving something back that also wouldn't necessarily be your first choice of how to spend the time. Top notch stuff!

What a great first post. Well done and welcome, Jules.
I reckon that your man understands you pretty well. An electric blanket was (I think) a pretty risky V. Day pressie. I love Vally Day, BTW.
Which reminds me – it's only a week away and I haven't even started to think of a present for FN yet.

I don't think im romantic my mother says im a cold person but being on the road for 15 yeays you do become cold to survive, since jade came along im a differnt person as i act the fool when out with her shopping ect just like a big kid she even say your so silly dad but i love it. So its very hard for me to show my feeling to others except for jade i even gave up my motor bike witch i had beed working on for over 10 years on and off and was offerd to be on show in the USA and a collector from holland was also intrested but i let it go for peanuts and still have not been paid for her but went through hell in and out of crown court for over a year to get custerdy of her long story but will go on my blog for jade to read when she is older.and i would have killed my self on that bike for those in the know she was around 180bhp/153kg's so jade came 1st and have no regets, only had two relaition ships in my life both was bad so staying single. Gone of the path a bit as usal lol.
