From today I will no longer be reading any articles, whether online or in the paper, published by The Sun, The News of the World or The Daily Mail.

For too long I have read their articles only to let them fuel my rage at their "race to the bottom"[1] approach to scandal-driven journalism and their hateful attitudes to women. The latest angle in the phone hacking scandal, involving the hacking of Milly Dowler's voicemail while she was newly missing, is the straw for me. The press, and in particular the tabloid press, are despicable money-grabbing scum and I will no longer contribute to their readership.

I've fooled myself for years into thinking it's ok because I don't actually buy their papers. Yet every time we pass a weblink along to share a jaw-dropping story, we drive up their page hits, their readership and, I fear their advertising revenue.

For me, it ends today.

[1] Thanks for the phrase, G

welldone  Well said Shereen!  I haven't read a newspaper for years, not even the local one.  I don't read them on-line either.

I'll try that again!

I am with you on this Shereen & I think it can be taken even further before even more of our media is polluted by these people,

Perhaps you would read & sign this (if you agree with it, that is)……I have.

Thanks Chris & TA,

I hope we get lots more in the next few days. It is really important that this does not go through & we all have a say (however small) in this decision.

I am definitely getting more militant in my old age.

I haven't read Murdoch's papers for years, I don't enjoy that kind of journalism.

The actions of these guys is absolutely outrageous/disgusting, take your pick.

Sadly I am a Saturday and Sunday Times addict (they are the only papers I buy and last me all week) so cannot say I wont read any of their publications but since I have never been a Mail, Sun or whatever man don't have a problem with any of their other rags.

Maybe also with the withdrawel of advertising they will get the message.

Lets hope..

Thanks for the link, Hattie. I couldn't find it from work today, and it's one that deserves publicity.

wave  I have also signed and posted it on my Facebook wall.  Thanks for flagging this up Shereen.  I am glad I do not read newspapers.  I gave that up years ago. I just couldn't be bothered with bias reporting and sensationalism.

All signed up too!

That's ridiculous, are they going to prosicute News of the World?

That's tampering with an investigation!

Signed on 38 degrees  petition.

38 Degrees flags up some of the same things as Avaaz, and some different ones. It is useful to get notification from both, and get involved with the ones that matter most to you. (I just delete the ones I don't sign. They are all good causes, but I can't take a stand on everything.)

Thanks for the extra info, you are right we need to keep informed on all aspects. It is too important to get things wrong.

cheers
