I recommend hitting them over the head with a large object!

My rant……just collected my Smart following it's mot and they failed it due to a wrongly adjusted light! This has a button in the car for adjusting and had probably been moved when the new (hopefully) owner tried it out. It cost us €63 for this and we have to get it retested once changed.

Surely, since it is easily adjustable (even I can do it!) and not exactly a mechanics special tool fix, they should just pass it?  Is there no-one to complain to?

I'll try that again!

Just waiting for sun to go down a bit so we can see the direction of the beam. It is having to be done to the actual light as these are English headlights adjusted to French. Maybe someone is telling me not to sell my Smart!

But weren't our smarts built in Germany for the Germans and shouldn't the lights have been the same as for France?

I'll try that again!

You would have thought so, the chap who looks after our cars said they are adjustable but being France they insist on us having French lights. The annoying thing is it was passed last year with no problem! No doubt some rule somewhere has changed recently without letting us know! One of the frustrations of living here.

I can't believe it, my boiler has gone wrong yet again so I have no heat or hot water again this morning & it is currently minus 6*C here……the same thing happened last time it was as cold as this. I have emailed the plumber & will phone him soon….he is not an early riser like me. This problem has to be fixed. Luckily I had a late bath last night so at least I am clean…..!! So out came my trusty oil-filled electric radiators once more but they are not the same, after having the central heating.

I just hope he comes out soon to sort it out……!!

Aww Nadine, sorry to hear that, let's hope he comes soon.big_hug In the meantime, wear lots of layers, have lots of hot drinks, and don't sit still!  (I don't think you do anyway lol).  Stand over the stove doing lots of cooking, that will warm you up! (my kitchen, with the lovely Rayburn, is the warmest place in our (unheated) cottage…..a good excuse in this weather for doing loads of baking!).

Thanks Aly & Sue but I have fixed it myself, I applied gentle heat under the boiler for about an hour, to melt the frozen valve & then re-pressurised the boiler's water system & it sprang into life (unlike earlier). Heat is now spreading throughout the house…Hurrah…!!  My advice is pay attention to what your workmen do. ask lots of questions & then write it all down in a special house note-book….it comes in very useful. I hate being defeated or too dependent on others especially expensive others…!!!!!   laugh  ok  wave

wave  Wow Nadine, I am so impressed with your skills.  I still think your plumber should try to rectify the problem as you cannot be doing that every time the temperature plummets.  And you should not be paying for his services!!!!!

OH took my Smart back to the test garage and guess what? It has passed, call me cynical but I am sure it failed on such a minor issue because it was me who took it in! Alls well that ends well!

Hattie I am surprised your frost stat didn't kick in, mine is set to do so at 7 degrees, that is 7 degrees not minus 7 degrees!!

Also, I have a condensing boiler and apparently they are very sensitive to frost etc.. so I had the condensing pipe (think that is the right name) internally and it only pokes through the external wall at the very last bit, which I am told also helps to prevent frost and ice problems.

I might have the body of a decrepid old man but my mind is as sharp as a boulder

Thanks Chris but my condensing pipe is indoors. I made sure of that when it was installed (although the plumber says he always installs them inside the building ). I think the frost stat is faulty or not set correctly. I also think my damaged Wychert walls are part of the problem; some idiot do-it-yourselfer in the 70's filled some areas with concrete instead of wychert plus had it coated with a waterproof & non-breathing paint. I hope to get this sorted but it is incredibly expensive. I am not sure how much I will be able to afford….!  eeek  I have to fix the falling down bathroom wall first !
