Janet, if you are using Royal Icing to decorate the cake please be sure to use enough Glycerine in the mix to ensure easy cutting of the cake.  E-mail me for an unhappy story that includes 333 roses and buds...

I'll try that again!

TA, I have a similar experience, though for the life of me I cannot remember how many roses, but yes the icing was a tad hard ..... steam

Bit of a shortcut, but the ready-to-roll icing is a lot easier to get through. ok

It didn't exist in those days Val, there was only Buttercream, Royal and Fondant ( which was homemade not bought).

I'll try that again!

That is true - I'm just thinking of Janet - today!

TA, how on earth did we do it? When I think of the creation I made, I couldn't do it now! big_laugh

The whole cake took me about three months I think !!

I have had to go back to making my own fondant or royal icing as not available here. I always make us a rich fruit cake for our anniversary.

Yes it took ages to do, not only making the roses and buds, but the three layers of icing on the cake that had to dry out each time.

I'll try that again!

Thanks Ladies, I am planning on using the ready made stuff which has glycerine already added I think to prevent brick like qualities.

Made a start tonight on the middle layer cake and doing the marzipan....I know I can say this on here because she won't read it, but not impressed with the cake, when I unwrapped it and levelled it out, I had a taste and it's rather dry and blimey, it has more holes than a box of polos, I've plugged most of the holes with bits of marzipan and had to use quite a bit on the corners to fill out, but I'm pretty pleased with the end result.

Having a problem with the blue icing, the supplier says they don't stock it and refuse to admit that they have already supplied me with some before, will maybe need to make ivory and blue flowers, which I suppose will look rather nice anyway.

Over 30 years ago I did make and ice my dad and step mum's wedding cake, and that was all that faffy icing and sculpting...took weeks, hoping this wont !eeek

waveHi Janet,

In my local town of Thame, there is a cake-making/icing supplies shop which sends products all over the country. I used to buy my icing from them for special occasion cakes when I had the restaurant......maybe they have blue icing & could send it to you. Here is the link.

Good luck.  big_hug

more problems...got all the dark blue flowers made, but...2 things...firstly, the weather is so humid, that they are not drying, and secondly, they stain everything they touch.

Have had to have a rethink today while taking one of my oldies to Southwell and had a quick trip to a couple of crafty shops in Nottingham, bought some silk flowers (ivory roses and cornflowers & blue irises ).

Also got some more Ivory icing, had conversation with Sue and I'm going for a different approach. The silk flowers are a standby. Got the cakes covered tonight, the big one was a nightmare, the icing tore as I put it on the cake and I've had to patch & polish, but I think it'll be ok.

Started some ivory flowers and then knocked over the pot of pearlescent food paint. bugger, bugger, bugger. Have given up for the night, Mike is out tomorrow evening so I'll have peace & quiet to get it finished.

You'll be glad when that cake is finished!  Don't forget to photograph it.

I'll try that again!

Why are you disappointed, Jan. Was it the blue icing business?

Last week, when I made the toadstool cake, I thought I would add some brown hedgehogs ...... my hands were brown for a day doh ... strange how some colours seem to run more than others.

I bet your cake looks fab though !  ok

Well you know me Val, or well you don't but maybe one day smile. I'm a perfectionist and you know what it's like, when you do something, you can see all the imperfections that no one else can see.

Sorry for the delay, folks, but here's the Dalek Cake that I made for my niece's son for his birthday last week. It was so hot here, that the fondant icing was a bit troublesome, but managed in the end!
