I don't imagine it makes a lot of difference; perhaps it is to conserve it longer?  If so, I don't know why I bother as it disappears fast chez nous!!

Just completed my xmas cake; I am very proud as this is the first time I have ever made it all including the marzipan and royal icing!!  Laugh

slightly concerned that the icing has now dried to the hardness of concrete on the cake; however I am sure it will taste fine!

Erm...you did put some glycerine in the icing mix didn't you?

Many years ago I made a three tierd wedding cake and forgot the glycerine - they had to chip the icing off with a chisel.  Was my face red!Embarassed

I'll try that again!

well it contained glycerine but obviously not enough as, like toffeeapple's cake the icing has to be chiseled off!!

sorry too busy eating away my sorrows through the LARGE jar of foie gras my neighbours gifted me with on xmas day; I find it very good at taking my mind off my cake problems  Smile

ps love the new smiley rangeRunAway but must dash back to my food!
