Have had several rhubarb based desserts already this year, but from local forced stuff, the garden rhubarb is looking lovely and due for picking soon.

I am wondering if the rule about not picking rhubarb in its first year applies to older rhubarb that is transplanted. I am planning to move all my rhubarb plants as soon as the earth is diggable as it is in too hot a spot and gets scorched come July and August. Will I be able to pick it after it is established in its new home? It is just starting to push up this week.

I would definitely leave an older crown and not crop from it - the main aim is for the roots to re-establish ASAP so keep it as stress free as possible would seem the best policy, especially if you are lifting/splitting a big and heavy crown. Once re-established you will get your pay back.

Could you not leave it this year, and find some means of shading it, Chris? If you want a good crop, wrong time to be moving it, would wait till Autumn, or Fall, as you call it  As Vic says, it will be just like a new Crown, and need to re-establish itself.

Thanks both of you. I may move one crown now and another in the Fall so I will at least have one to pick from.

Bought some rhubarb from local market, rhubarb crumble will result, some for now and some frozen away for later.

Are we having fun yet? I am!

I'm very envious, Ian. Mine won't be ready to pick for several weeks yet. I am consoling myself with some rhubarb and ginger jam from last year's crop.
