we have a 50ft perry pear tree that we plan to do something with one of these years. We don't have a tractor though and only a small press

We have the tractor but our pear trees will need to do a lot of growing before there are enough pear ready for that kind of treatmentdoh

If working on a smaller scale use a garden shreder it produces an excellent pulp I then put it a spinner (used to reduce the water content before putting on the line or in the tumble dryer). Get more juice than a press and can get more juice and quicker than a press you can do something else while it spins. Note may have a problem with muslin bags try a pillow case.
