We had to make do and mend when I was growing up since Dad was unable to work in the pit any more.  He used to repair watches every now and then and he also used to heel and sole our shoes on his last.  Anything knitted was unpicked and re-knitted by Mum and she would make all of my dresses and blouses and her own too, sometimes remaking hand-me-downs.

I'll try that again!

A while ago, a friend gave me a box of lovely materials, and when I saw her last, she mentioned that each and every one of those fabrics brought back a memory, but she couldn't see herself using them any more.

While down in France I made a handbag for her, using a pair of my jeans plus some of her material.

I have only the last bit to do - sew on a button, then I'll take a picture.

I drew the design I wanted, then cut out the paper pattern, and I'm chuffed to bits that it turned out as good as it did. Hopefully, it'll be finished tomorrow!

Hi Val,

What a lovely thing to do for your friend.....I feel the same about some of the materials etc that I still hoard. I have been thinking about using some of them to make cushion covers this winter. I also have some bits of petit-point & cross-stitch that I need to do something with. At some point I really need to edit my collection of fabrics as over the years it has grown out of all proportion. When I do I will post what I want to get rid of on the forum in case any one wants it. I was very lucky as some of the costume-makers who made up my designs gave me some of their surplus materials & left over snippets.  Some years ago I donated a whole pile of stuff to the local junior school where one of my neighbours taught & they were in heaven....It really brightened up their nativity play that year....I was invited to see it & it was fun to see what the various mums had made out of my materials.

I am sure your friend will treasure the bag, both for your skill & creativeness & kindness as well as her memories bought back by the materials themselves.

Looking forward to seeing your photos.  smile

Ah, thank you Sue, you're too kind. big_hug

It was lovely fabric to work with, and having a blue pattern went well with the denim.  ok

I just love the bag, Val, it is quite lovely. I too love blue & white & it goes so well with the denim. The bag is such an elegant shape, I'm sure your friend will use it a lot & it will give her a lot of pleasure.
