For us smokers, great cash savings can be made by buying as much ciggies / tobacco as possible when on a trip abroad.

UK Customs appear to be under orders to confiscate as much as possible although (as the site below says) There are NO LIMITS as to the amounts you can bring back for personal use.

I came across this site today. There are many horror stories about the apparently unjust and allegedly illegal tactics used by UK Customs to seize goods and cars etc.

The advice given regarding preparation for returning with tobacco from a trip abroad is excellent. It appears that you really can bring in justifiable quantities if you have done your homework as regards consumption and gifts for friends/relatives.

Whether or not you are a smoker, it is a good read.

Customs will try anything to trick you so they can take cigs of you.

FROM THE CUSTOMS INTERNET SITE

Arrivals from EU countries
When arriving into the UK from an EU country you can bring in an unlimited amount of most goods.

For excise goods such as alcohol and tobacco, there are no restrictions. However you must meet the conditions below:

¢You transport the goods yourself.
¢The goods are for your own use or as a gift. If the person you give the goods to pays you in any way (including reimbursing you for any expenses or payment in kind), then it's not a gift and the goods may be seized.
¢The goods are duty and tax paid in the EU country where they were acquired.
If you don't meet these conditions, the goods (and any vehicle that transported them) may be seized.

You can read more about Excise Duty in the guide 'Customs Duty, Excise Duty and Import VAT: introduction'. You'll find a link to this at the end of the page.

I would suggest reading the customs site I bought back 60+ all they took of me is the duty free Gibraltar ones.

Make sure you have with you a copy of the rules from the customs and exercise site.

Do not be conned by statements like they will go off (ciggerates and tobacco) as they were confisating cigs on that basis a while back. If you do a search you will find the page with a statement by the tobacco firms saying this is rubbish.

If you bring back one brand you will have less hasle.
