Thank you very much, S.O.L. and Toffeeapple - I'll certainly have a look at that site, if not for Sophia, then for us.  Sadly, considering her Parsi heritage, my daughter HATES Indian food Confused.  When we stayed with Zaz's cousins in Chennai I thought she was going to starve (until we discovered Pizza Hut, LOL).  She LOVES Basmati rice which she will eat by the tablespoonful with nothing on it but butter, but the only other Indian thing she would ever eat was chicken tikka.

I wonder if I could make tofu tikka?? Whistle  I've never tried tofu, looks to me like something you'd throw straight in the bin to cut out the middleman, but perhaps others know differently?!

We eat tofu very sparingly.  You can make alot of chinese style consomme soups, add some spice and some left over meat bit for others and make hot and sour soup.  silken tofu can be added to smoothies and milkshakes if you think she lacks protein

I work with someone who is a vegetarian who doesnt like veggies or legumes?  she eats oven chips, pizza and thinks  eating baked beans is being super healthy.

quorn on the other hand alot of people like.  myself not so much.  and it is hugely expensive.  but could be used to fill in when you cook the likes of spag bol, you could make this at the same time.  (not forgetting to use carrots, whizzed up to near breadcrumb consistency, making it go further)

you can hide extra veg in homemade baked beans, using a heavy sofrito base, then add in some small dice turnip...?  am winging it here butgood food comes from trying different things.

Oh and you defo can learn to like spicy food, just try it with different things a slight  spice in pizza, whole family can enjoy that.  do it gradually

Lots of beans.  Easy.  Get any random wilted veg you have around, chop it, add a load of beans, chuck it in a slo-cooker or casserole dish or big pan with tinned tomatoes, whatever herbs or spices you like, some bacon, and cook it all really slowly.   Oops, veggie - well, just leave out the bacon.

It usually comes out really yummy when I make it, though its rarely the same twice.  Very cheap, very filling (can be eaten on its own, or with bread, rice, pasta, spuds….) and stupidly easy to make.

I don't do recipes very often, mostly I just chuck things in and see what comes out of the other end.

Tonight we have chicken and msuhroom soup made from stock and leftover chicken from Sunday roast (which then also supplied sandwiches as well) which was made in pretty much the same manner as the beans stew, in the slo-cooker with any ransom ingredients I had lying around.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy, and taste good with ketchup.

Thanks for the ideas SOL.  The Octopus is in oil, I like the first 2 recipes for the Octopus but not sure I want to fire up the bbq in this weather for the last one!  Laugh

I bought it in Madeira.  (If you're wondering why, where I work we have a lot of international students so we have various great things in the shop, one of which is an aloe vera drink – Korean I think.  I like this so figured I'd buy the tin but have failed to do anything with it since!)

I found this recipe but my pc won't open it properly for some reason so I can't see all the instructions.  Yell

Also found a curry recipe but as mine's in syrup I'm thinking – yurk. Laugh

Guess it's the smoothie / juice route with yoghurt or oj then.  I'll let you know how it goes!

I have also been given 2 kg of carrots this week so am eager for interesting new recipes for these, especially if I can freeze them.  I've put a post in the 'Starters / soups etc' and 'main meals' section for this if anyone has any ideas.  You can't get much more frugal than free!  Laugh

how is everyone doing with the challenge.  Week 1, total spend £7.24.  Week 2, £6.53.  Am not stressed yet.  But did not pay enough attention or measure peas.  So I am going to run out.  Wasted peas, thrown in bin from not using measure.  Tut tut.  Best try harder me thinks...

I'm so glad you are doing well  S.O.L.   I  think of you every time I go to my chest freezer in the shed.  If I ever get to the bottom of it I shall probably fall in trying to get stuff out.  I try to organise it often, but it never works.  I've tried lists but I never seem to keep them going.  However I am buying no more meat till I get through what  I have.

Before I would budget £5 a week, but things have gone up in price. so after much gnashing of teeth, the limit is £7 a week.  So £28 for the month.  Bit more one week, less the next...

wow – that is extreme frugality :)

We're spending about £25 a week, but that is probably less than half of our usual, and a lot of that is fruit, milk, butter, and stuff we'd run out of like toilet paper, razers etc.

though when I put it like that it seems like alot. apples aren't THAT expensive! I'll pay more attention this week.

I am aiming to spend very little in March when I use up what is in my freezer and the veg in the shop will be rubbish anyway so I shall use up what is in the freezer while we wait for the snow to go.

grapecat, that £28 a month is only for the frugality drive.  2 months only.  other than that we spend about £30 a week on food. that is for 2 adults

that's still pretty impressive though!

One thing this is making me aware of is the rather enormous gap between what I think we spend in a week on food and what we actually do. All those £7-8 here and there add up astonishingly fast.

Totally agree, grapecat - recently, before Christmas, we had £12-off vouchers, if the spend is £60. How easy is that?

We start with a calculator to ensure that we do spend the £60, and then very soon realise it wasn't really needed .........

Inventory your cupboards and freezer, the meal plan and make a list.  shop alone and only purchase from the list.  I used to be a browser, they are the people the supermarket love. 

to pay the mortgage off before we are 40, it essential for us both to check the budget, where we are at with the savings and to make sure all bases are covered.  This is a 2 person job and shared goal.  This is just one of the things that will give us  freedom financially.  Its a long haul trip.  but at the end it will be worth itWink

Well didn't quite make paying off my mortgage by the age of 40 but 45 and it sure makes things a whole lot simpler, what we have is what we have Cheers and we don't owe a bean.
