Hi,

Having looked around for a mobile phone app that would help me record and remember my foraging finds, I failed to find anything that was suitably simple and effective, so I decided to have a go at writing my own. I have a technology background, but this is my first attempt at writing a mobile phone app, and I'd really appreciate some feedback on what people think of it. A free version (limited to storing 3 items) can be found here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pandasoft.forager.lite&hl=en
It's based around google maps and allows you to easily catalog and then search for your finds. Never forget a source of free and fantastic food again!!

All data is stored locally on your phone, it's completely private. There's functionality to export items from your database using email, primarily via for backup purposes, but you could actually use it to share finds with friends if you wish.

Any suggestions for improvements welcomed. And if you do like it, feel free to leave some feedback on Google Play and tell all your friends!

Regards,

Andy.

Hello Geordie

With respect, we don't know you from Adam, so it would be polite to introduce yourself (on the appropriate Introductory thread!), rather than just appearing out of the blue to promote some app you've designed.  Wouldn't it?    ponder

Sorry to be so cynical, but we have too many people who aren't actually interested in becoming genuine members of our friendly little community, just joining up to promote something or other and then disappearing never to be seen again.

Sooliz,

I don't believe I have breached any forum rules by posting what I've posted, I did check when signing up, but of course if a moderator or admin disagrees, then I will happily abide by their decision.

I have (in my  opinion) provided valuable contributions to numerous types of forums over the years without ever providing a back story on myself, I'm simply not one for sharing a lot of private information online.  I'm more than happy to respond to any questions people have about myself if I feel it's important to the subject in question.

My primary reason for posting here is not to promote something, but it's perhaps an unavoidable byproduct.  As I state in my original post, I could not find a solution to a problem I had, so devised my own solution.  I genuinely think it would be a useful tool for the foraging community, but I want to know what other people think.  My primary reason for posting is to get some feedback on the tool.  If people come up with some good ideas, that are within my skill and time limits to develop, then I will look to add them to the tool, for the benefit of the wider foraging community.

If I don't reach out to communities like this, then they will never know such a tool exists.  Most forums are founded to share useful information and ideas on a particular subject, but perhaps I have misunderstood the intention of this particular forum.

Yes, it is a part of the terms and conditions of listing an app on Google Play that an address and email address must be displayed.  I'm not one for telling my life story online though, which is what I was referring to.

If anyone does have any genuine feedback on the app I would love to hear it.

I don't go foraging so it is of very limited use though, however, I would suggest increasing the number of saved site. Three is very limited for a 'lite' version. I would suggest increasing it to a more usable level but to encourage people to upgrade restrict some function such as exporting/importing data.

Please do go over to the introduction section and tell us a bit about yourself. It does sound like you have more to offer if you are into foraging, always good to hear more about that.

Hi Simon - we went to The Hexagon yesterday to see the Dick Whittington pantomime, and came past your turning, made me think of you again; also CSH get-together; smoking garlic; and general friendly afternoon spent with other forumites. big_hug  Big sigh.

We must have another meet-up Val, so that you and I could actually meet...

I'll try that again!
