Yes, Maggenpie - I did a lot of spoon licking, too.  Best part of washing up, innit.

 

Thanks to all foragers who commented earlier on the River Cottage Handbook, 'Hedgerow' by John Wright.  Following your comments I searched for it on line on my local county's libraries site - and a copy was sitting on the shelf in my own local library.  Picked it up yesterday morning and had read half way through by bedtime.  Went damson foraging today but forsook taking the book with me as I knew I'd drive OH barmy by stopping every few feet to identify all sorts of green stuff in the lane.  Came back with lots of samples, though, to identify tonight.

 

I thought foraging was supposed to be inexpensive.  My secret damson spot was found by accident last year, but was so prolific that I made a special note to return this year.  Did a 60 mile round trip today, only to find the secret lane had been flailed up to a height of about 10 ft!  Still plenty of damsons, but 90% were out of reach.  Came back with a modest 2 3/4 lb, at a cost of £28 (2 pub lunches) + petrol costs.  Damsons in local greengrocers were a lot cheapersteam  (but not nearly so much fun to getsmilesmile).  Will be making damson gin tomorrow, in readiness for next autumn.  Last year's DG is pretty scrummy, and probably will not acquire another year's vintage.medicine

Just done  another day of foraging!

Now have around 4kg of rosehips in the freezer, along with some hawthorn berries. I also found some walnuts; well lots really, some figs, some quince and some of the last sloes round here!

I have noticed and noted for future forages, a medlar tree

I also got up the courage to ask my neighbour behind us if she really meant it when she said she had fruit on her fruit trees that she didnt want.. am popping over tomorrow to go picking!

 

I have decided to freeze the rosehips until I have more, also the sloes and the haws.  I am going to place the walnuts in honey to sell.  Finally I am going to make a fig jelly and then use the pulp to make a fruit jelly

I have noted your frugal approach to rosehip syrup maggenpie and think I will follow the same route

I froze the sloes and the rosehips.  I have stewed the figs, along with some from the neighbour, who offered me her fruit for free!  I have shelled all of the walnuts and tomorrow I will lightly toast them and then jar them in honey!

I have ignored the quince for the mo!

The neighbour also gave me the last of her mirabelles; I have stewed them too.  Both the figs and the mirabelles will eb made into fruit jellies

 

Not bad then??

Not at all bad!  I wish I had your energy.  The walnuts in honey sound delish.  The quince won't spoil if you leave it for quite a while will it?

Dont think so, but have already ruined one lot; so I hope not!

However the nice neighbour has a wonderful quince tree (the best I have ever seen) and she will let me have some when she thinks they are ripe!

how do you tell when a quince is ripe ? next door has a hedge full of japonica quince going to waste and i wondered when i should approach her for my scrounging

if I read the guides I found online then quince is ripe when it is still hard but yellow?  Hope that helps!
