The easy way is to simply paste the link into your post like this

http://www.google.co.uk

and it becomes clickable by anybody who reads it.

The downside is that the link opens in this window and the reader is taken away from the forum. Some people are OK with that but we think the better and neater way is to convert one or two words into a link that can optionally be set to open in a new window.

Very long links can also cause width problems in some browsers. This uses the "Insert/edit link" button on the toolbar. It is normally disabled until you highlight text in your post that coud be converted into a link:

1. Write the sentence in your post. For example, mine could be:

This is how you can get your own image or Gravatar that appears beside your posts in the forum and your comments in this blog and many others.

2. I want to convert the words "get your own image or Gravatar" into a link

3. First copy your link so that you can paste it into the little window that will open up in step 5

4. Highlight the text that you want to become a link. In my case it is the words in Step 2

5. The toolbar button is now enabled.

6. Click on that button and a pop-up window will appear. Paste your link into the Link URL box

7. In the Target drop-down list, select "Open link ina new window" and then click Insert.

This is the end result in my example. I now have a neat link in the text of my post:

This is how you can get your own image or Gravatar that appears beside your posts in the forum and your comments in this blog and many others.

I'm having trouble doing this. I get as far as "Paste link into the Link/URL box" but nothing appears. I presume the mistake is in the copying step. Can you suggest what I am doing wrongly? Thanks

Chris, if you look alongside Danny's "No.1" - you can just make out he has circled in red the icon to click on.

1. The link web address you want to display should have already been copied, say, a pattern or some such.

2. Then type in your sentence into your new post - then highlight the words you are presenting - words like "link here"; or "like this"; or "pattern here". When you have highlighted these words, click on that icon, circled by Danny. The menu box should appear in the middle of the screen.

3. When that happens, you paste in your previously copied link web address (from No.1 above)

4. The line below this gives you an option, you should choose "Open link in new window"

5. Then click on "insert".

6. Done!

Chris I'm not too sure if this is any clearer at all, but once you've achieved it, you'll wonder why you hadn't managed it before!

Good luck. big_hug

Unless you're me, in which case you'll wonder how you managed it at all, never mind about ever being able to do it again big_laughembarassed

On the other hand Chris, just do what you can and I'll try to fix it, just like I do for Sue...tongue

I'll try that again!

The link I wanted to copy was http://www.cbc.ca/bestrecipes So I have highlighted it and used the edit menu to copy it. Now I will try to insert it here. OK now I have it, as per Danny's instructions.

Should have said it showed up in the "Link/URL" box and I completed step 7, so I am still going wrong somewhere.

OK, lets see if I can help.

1. Open the site you want to share and highlight the line that has https in it.

2. Right click then click 'copy'.

3. Come back to this site and your post, highlight a word and the 'link and unlink' icons will show bright.

4. Click on the unbroken 'link' icon and it will show you the Link URL box.

5. Right click in the URL box, under that you will see 'target, not set', click the arrow and chose 'open in     a new window' then press the 'insert' button.

Et Voilá!

I'll try that again!
