My husband recently bought an M&S sandwhich - wenslewdale and carrot chutney. It was delicious, and as I have recently got into jam making (with much help from this website) I thought I'd have a go at making him some. The ingredients listed are carrot, onion, sugar, white wine vinegar. I think that is it.  I have googled carrot chutney and all the recipes are much more complicated than this. Any ideas on how to make chutney with these ingredients?  If not I will just give it a go - are there any rules? e.g. how much sugar to fruit / veg?

Hi Jane, and welcome to the forum.

I saw this on moneysavingexpert " if that's any help.

Good Luck

read a few of them - some are comical ....

Thanks Brightspark - that's great. As it happens I had already discovered the money saving expert site, but followed your link anyway to see if it was the same, and lo and behold someone had added a recipe that sounds just right - yesterday! Doesn't have onions in it though so might add them in instead of some of the carrot. Or is that a bad idea?

I would say 'whatever takes your fancy' - try it and see. It may be even better!

That's interresting. A carrot chutney. Whatever next!

I loved this bit:

"Remove skin and bones of carrots and boil it"

Would be really interested in how it turns out, Jane laugh

Good luck with the experimenting. I know the sandwich of which you speak, and it is very tasty.

I had one of those M&S sandwiches a couple of years ago and really liked it. I had a go at making a carrot chutney and the end result was ok but I can't find the recipe at the moment. I think I may have made a normal onion chutney and added grated carrot - similar to some of the recipes on the moneysaving site. I remember it was a fairly simple recipe though.

I've never made chutney before, so I think I'll have a go at making a tried and tested recipe first- I have a lot of windfall apples.  Then I think I'll do similar to you Mike, and use an onion chutney recipe with added carrot.
