I had a go at peeling ginger with a teaspoon today - works very well. I am pleased to have a supply of ready- to-grate ginger in the freezer.

Thanks for the tip.

So pleased it worked for you. I read it somewhere and was amazed at how easy it is to peel the ginger with the tip of the spoon. I think the ginger grates better when it is frozen as well.

I'm making some chilli jelly and mint jelly today with juice I extracted from crab apples in the steamer.

I have bottled the juice and kept it in the fridge and it is still lovely after 4 weeks. I have only just started to bottle the juice rather than freeze it as my freezers are full!

I can't always use the juice straight away but wanted to process the apples before they shriveled up, so bottling the juice was the only option left to me.

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

I'm making Rose Jelly today - it even sounds pretty! It's from Thane Prince's book "Ham, Pickles and Jam". actually it's apple jelly, with a few blackberries for colour and at the end you add 2-3 Tbsps of rosewater. the fruit is in the steamer now.

I have an idea why this particular thread may not have much traffic... Possibly it's because when you have newly bought a fruit steamer you need the help and a place to ask questions. But once you've got used to using it, you may not need the thread....Perhaps? But for me, I'm pleased to have this place.

I have a small amount of bottled juice, stored on the floor of the garage, to use in jellies, or perhaps sweeten to use as a drink or mixer.

Any suggestions on how to clean off the whitish residue left by hard water in the base pan of the steamer? I would like to continue using this pan for finishing the jelly, but I'm not sure if the residue will affect the jelly. I have tried using diluted vinegar, then neat vinegar - it has made some difference, but not got rid of it completely, esp on the sides.
