Can rosehips be an irritant?

I froze mine prior to using them and now I'm worried they might cause a problem because they were very soft and squishy when thawed out.

I obtained the juice from the rosehips and crabapples in my steamer. I placed a square of muslin under the fruit and also over the jug when straining off so it looks lovely and clear - no hairs or seeds.

I read the hairs and seeds are an irritant and used to make 'itching powder'!

My 2 grown up children often suffer a bad reaction to some raw fruit - swollen lips and mouth so I am just being a bit cautious as I know fruit can have a bad effect.

Was I wrong to freeze the rosehips?

Would it have been better to steam them whole?

Does anyone know if rosehips have caused a problem after they have been cooked.

Oh, bother....the juice looks so lovely, I will be disappointed if it's no use now.

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

As long as you strain the juice through a fine muslin I don't think you will have a problem. I've never tried it though so don't quote me on it *grin*

If you steam juiced it then there will not be any hairs, fine or otherwise, to irritate.  The manufacturers of rosehip syrup extract the juice in exactly the same way.
