thought I would add this on here for anyone who may wish to try it.

MOCK FISH

1/2 pint of milk

2 ounces of ground rice

1 teasp of chopped onion or leek

a spoonful of margarine the size of a walnut

anchovy essence to season  (optional)

1 egg beaten

 handful of breadcrumbs

bring milk to a boil in a pan, and remove from heat. Add to the pan the ground rice, onion or leek, margarine and anchovy essence.

Let this simmer for 20 mins, then take pan off the heat and stir in beaten egg, mix well.

transfer to a flat dish and spread out to 7-8 inches in diameter. cut into fish  fillet shapes.

brush with milk and roll in breadcrumbs.

fry until golden, serve with parsley sauce.

I let mine stand in the fridge to firm up before coating with breadcrumbs, and cooked in the oven 220 degC for 30 mins turning over halfway.

This sounds interesting - how was it as a 'mock' fish vs a nice 'something different to eat' dish?

Rob

Well the mock fish did not taste very fishy but it may have done if I had been able to get the anchovy essence. But I liked it and will do it again as it was very cheap to make and did make a change from always having meat. Do not feel so full and bloated. The texture was maybe like one of the  cheaper fish fillets, you know the ones where the re shape them from fish pieces.

There are photos on my blog.

Hmm, not sure I'll bother trying this one Rob, think ill stick to the proper stuff, never seem to get that bloated feeling on fish anyway but well done for trying, would you do it again?

will try it again, as I did not have a problem with the texture, but will try to get more flavour into it.

Try using the Anchovy spiced paste, you can get it in all supermarkets.

I'll try that again!

I have morrisons which is a 2 mile walk away, also m+s food in the same place. ( I don't get the bus as it costs me £4 for a round trip)  or we can drive 10 miles to the nearest tesco.

Made the mock fish again this evening. I managed to get around the anchovy part by buying a small tin of anchovies in oil and using half of this , cut up finely and the mashed with a pestle. It tasted quite good.
