I had a miracle at Tescos the other night , their CFC is either empty or barely discounted , but i found a very bored junior staff member pricing it up, she had done everything at 88p or £1.00. so i blew a weeks grocery money on packs of 4 lamb chops £1 each 6 of , 6 packs of lamb mince at 88p each , extra special 2 chicken breast in something? 88p 4 packs , 2 indian meals in a bag £1 each and a big cake for £1. The cake didnt last long ..lol..but this will spin out over the next few weeks , protein being so expensive these days , now i just need to do the rounds today at closing, this is usually the best day of the year for CFC

Well done, sounds like you did well. We get a lot of our protein from pulses when the chickens are not giving enough eggs. Nothing like a good bargain to warm the cockles of the heart!

Crikey! Thanks, Janet.

I never thought they had the production capacity to supply Tesco UK.

Times have changed I guess (in the past 20 years doh) .

Tesco do seem to trial brands and then drop them fairly quickly. I went looking for a Ken Hom crispy fried half duck for a treat last Friday but Ken He Gone. frown

At least you get to taste them lots of things never seen here! I cannot even get a pack of bean sprouts, they only do jars here which are not as good. Crispy duck? Forget it. Strange animal parts, well now you're talking, found in abundance and often in the cheap section!

Aly, I found some bean sprouts in Auchan, but unfortunately quite a huge pack. That's okay if you're entertaining, but it takes a concerted effort to use it all if there's only two of you !! ponder

No Auchan near here! Hyper U, Le Clerc or Carrefour! Very occasionally find bean sprouts in Le Clerc.

I've never been in Hyper U - but I would have thought that Carrefour are the bigger store (?) and maybe sell it - but then it depends on demand, perhaps.

Hi Aly,

Why don't you have a go at sprouting your own, they don't take long & there are lots of different seeds you could try.

Here is a useful discussion about the different seeds people have tried. You just have to check that the seeds have not been treated with a chemical to kill bugs but if you buy organic seeds you should be OK. The sellers usually have a warning on the packet if something has been treated.

You can adapt some containers (garden or kitchen equipment) or buy a set of trays.  Here is a site which shows what is on offer by one company in the UK.

Edit:  Here is an organic company in the UK with simple cheap sprouters & who sell bulk seed.

Picked up a rather gorgeous beef rib yesterday in Tesco, not on the CFCs, just on the butchery counter, but they have it on offer at £8 per kg and it was rather tasty looking, so I thought we'd have a treat. Not sure when we will eat it yet. Got a good haul of the CFC counter too, liver, smoked haddock, satsumas ( 30p a bag) and also some bags of pecan nuts...anyone got any good ideas for pecans, got quite a few and no particular plans...don't want to make biscuits or cake. Have looked at Internet and apparently you can freeze them, so that may end up being the plan.
