I realise that one has to be careful with fresh food and that all fooodstuffs must now have an expiry date by law, but there seems to be an obsession with people around me to throw out perfectly good stuff because of a date.

Cans have a date but the very fact that they are canned means they last!

Surely common sense should prevail  with alot of this wastage. Unfortunately it seems common sense is being bred out of the gene pool....my own son (I have a great deal of CS) refused to feed his dog a can of Pedigree chum because it was 2 weeks out of date ....he's obviously earning too much.

The more people I meet, the more I love my animals!

Did find out that trying to defrost a chicken that wasn't frozen resulted in a rather smelly unhealthy mess - this is one of the first times in my life I am throwing something out Sorry, senior moment I thinkCry

LOL, Joanna. Glad I was not there Roll_Eyes

The only thing i am wary of regarding best before dates is fish, especially shellfish. The nose is not always correct in determining if those are still on the good side of the "eat and be horribly sick" dividing line.

I'm another one who's more guided by smell and feel rather than dates, although I am wary when assessing chicken, pork or fish. Shopping at the market means your food rarely comes with a "best befoer" sticker on it, so you're forced to use your own judgement. I discovered that cream that was very close to, or a little past its use by date is much better for making pasta sauce than fresh cream.

Also, I don't understand the workmate who threw out carrots because they were out of date. Surely you can look at a carrot and decide if it's ok or not to eat? Surely people can't be that afraid of food?

I've got a VERY good nose when its not currently dribbling with hayfever, so I judge by that rather than sell by dates.  OH tends to trust the label, given the choice, so I don't give him it Big_Laugh

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy, and taste good with ketchup.

My OH vacillates on sell-by dates, sometimes he'll use stuff that is obviously on the turn then next time he'll bin something that is one day out of date.   I just can't work out his logic.  Roll_Eyes

I'll try that again!

If men accepted that everything that goes wrong is their fault and gave in gracefully they would have a much happier life and exceed their expiry date.
