We had lots of fruit flies a month or so ago, they are a pain, but yellow sticky papers does seem to do the job quite well. They've gone now, but will no doubt be back at some time, usually around chutney making time

Oh blee! At least the flour weevils couldn't fly up in my face!

It's been a couple of days and the cupboard is still bug-free. Groceries tomorrow night, so I'll get to replace the binned goods. I had to improvise yesterday when baking the buns as I had no caster sugar. I whizzed up some granulated sugar in the blender, and used two thirds it to one third icing sugar. Seems to have worked OK.

I think I'd have just gone for the granulated Shereen, in buns, would it have made a massive difference?

I had the problem the other way round yesterday, making fudge for my stall, I needed golen granulated and only had golden caster

The last time I made them with granulated they had an odd texture, like the sugar hadn't dissolved. It wasn't unpleasant, but not as nice as usual.

How did the fudge turn out?

Absolutely fine, I'm now thinking of experimenting with the cream side, the recipe calls for 1pt of whipping cream, but youcan't always get it, so I thought I'd try half double cream and half single - having researched whipping cream on the internet, it seems all to relate to fat content.

Hoovered up the flies today, got some big ones in there to.  Only had the work Henry but it was excellent at the job and if I listen carefully to the end of the hose I can hear some of the larger ones still buzzinglaugh

Well, that didn't go quite as expected

We get weevils in rice. They sell all kinds of fancy expensive things to put in your rice bin, but I have always used bay leaves. I have made several Japanese friends happy with this knowledge!  Some people use dried chillis.

The thing I hate is the cockroaches. There are some whoppers here. There you are sitting on the sofa, minding your own business, when out of the corner of your eye you become aware of a flurry of movement as a massive creature runs in front of you. Yuck.

One summer I went to England for 6 weeks, and when I came back I found an infestation. Goodness, the smell! When there are a lot of them, their s--t stinks! They had got everywhere, even in the clothes cupboards. I would lie in bed at night (and it is particularly disturbing when one's bed is made on the floor) and hear the patter of cockroach feet in the kitchen. After I got rid of them, using an American product called Combat, I had to do a complete clean-up. It was disgusting.
