Weird these voices, one tells me I'm too fat the other says I'm cuddly! One says I don't want any cake the other says I am desperate for cake. I let them have their way in turns!

Anyway hi Liz and welcome wave from a Lancashire lass who's many miles from the land of her birth in Latvia. Might be colder where I am but I think it is drier - my dad used to work in Manchester.cheers

Hi Liz,

I used to live in Manchester back in the early 90s. This was well before I got into growing veg, which was just as well since the house had a tiny concrete back yard (it felt literally not much bigger than 1 yard but it can't have been that small). The city has changed enormously since then.

Visit my blog for food, drink, photography and hamsters.

Saw this, Danny:

Retrobate: n. One who can't, or who refuses to walk the bleeding edge of technology, preferring old, reliable tools. I.e. one who shuns PDAs for notebooks, pencils and pocket calendars; would rather meet in real life than on MySpace; and who'd still shoot with cameras which require film. A Luddite.

Lived in Manchester as a nipper, then Oldham- when you could see it for the smog from the factories, it was quite nice.

We lived in a pretty village, called Prestbury, for 4 years, it is south of Manchester, though not Lancashire, but Cheshire. Our daughter went to Salford uni !!!!!

That's my claim to fame !! big_laugh   big_laugh

I was born in Prestbury Val- only saw it as a place a few years ago as we lived in Manchester at the time I was born, but the maternity unit was in an old house in Prestbury.

Oh, Martin, you'll enjoy this website (if you've not seen it already!). ok

Some way down the page there is a picture of Mr Victor Trill - Headmaster of the school - he was there when our children were pupils - and at 90+ yrs, he is still going strong.

I like the quote at the very bottom, from Cheshire Life stating there are two Prestburys .........

(For those who don't know the area, Prestbury is very close to Alderley Edge and Wilmslow, where a lot of footballers and their wives have homes.)

"How do you spell 'Love'?" (Piglet).

"You don't spell it, you feel it" (Pooh).

Thanks Val,

I see there  on the website the name of the house I was probably born in- Collar House, which is now a care home and was owned by the Mosely family at the time I was born but was the maternity home for the ones closed in Manchester.

When we made our visit, I asked at the Post Office if they knew of the house, and they pointed us to what I think must have been the right house because it was a care home, but at the time I was uncertain, so now that I think confirms it.

My mother always said I was born in the house of the Mosely's so it all ties in perfectly, so that helps me with my Genealogy research as well.
