Just a quick note to say hello to all! I have been a cottage smallholder lurker for a few years now but felt it was time to come out of the shadows! Laugh

I live in Norfolk and grow my own vegetables and fruit. I love cooking and food and HFW is my hero! I'm particularly interested in trying to be as self sufficient as possible while holding down full time employment!

So hello to all!

Hi Jude and welcome.  I too love HFW and would love to be like him, well as far as self sufficiency goes.  Lots of reasons why it is impossible, but I do my best.

Hi Jude. It's good to se another Norfolk lass here. I was born & raised in north-west Norfolk but now live across the pond in Los Angeles - the traffic is awful and the people are crazy but the weather is fabulous Laugh I do miss living in Norfolk though, especially having our own fruit & vegetable garden. I was a fan of HFW when I lived back home but alas his show isn't on TV over here. Am glad that you've come out of the shadows WellDone

Hi Jude, I'm also a fan of HFW except for one he tried, SLUGS!! our solution to slugs for food is to have the chicken (only have one at the moment) convert them to eggs, take her out for a walk around the veggie plot every night before she goes to bed. Every bit helps.

In fairness to HFW, he did find the slugs disgusting. And since snails are widely eaten and are just slugs with good PR, you can't really blame him for trying, although I don't think I'd be brave enough to. The thing with HFW is that he's always so enthusiastic when cooking, even if you don't like what he's doing it's always entertaining.

I agree with that statement, I love his whole attitude to life and living.

I'll try that again!

Hi, Jude, and thank you for joining in.

I can only apologise for my colleagues who have (true to form) transmogrified your initial  Hello All thread into a discussion about the pros and cons of snails as a meat course.

Don't blame me!
