Ahhh - I guess it's just a dream, Joanna. Nobody need worry about us inviting ourselves anywhere for a few years yet. Still looking forward to skating on the Latvian Everglades Laugh

Not sure about skating on the everglades, you would have to brush the snow off first. We went cross country skiing up the hill from us this afternoon on our new skis - my feet are killing me, those boots are tough. We enjoyed it enough though to think about how we could plan a route around our bit of land, but then we would have to drive there instead of just walking (or when we gain confidence) ski up.

The Cottage Smallholder World Tour?  Sounds like fun.  My daughter and her boyfriend ran off to Las Vegas last year - and got married!  I was thrilled, no need for the Mother of the Bride hat!

Joanna, your afternoon sounds like a fun but hard time. It must be exciting to have the opportunity to make such plans.

I'll try that again!

Danny, we'll keep a spot ready for you and Fiona in the treehouse!

Betsy, I think you have a teehouse booking confirmation! Just been reading about the San Juan Islands on Wikipedia. Quite an interesting history.

Our dream trip (leg 1) is to drive (wander slowly) north from San Fancisco to Vancouver. It's a part of the world that holds a fascination for me - must be a previous life thing. I did a small part of it to beyond Russian River once but that was just a taster.

It is exciting Toffeeapple but at some stage we have to make the fun pay, fortunately at the moment we can live off savings because our daily outgoings are not huge. Next year we really begin experimenting with our land, trying to start on the process of getting some of it re-designated for building on ie barns, house and a small studio/guest house, which will not end in tears if we plan on doing that kind of thing over five years - if we tried to do it all in one year it would end in tears. We will also start planting and see what grows where, we are planning on a mini-vineyard, currant bushes and nut bushes in a steep part of the land - saves cutting it. After that it is a process of more watching to see what parts of the land regularly floods, which parts we would want to drain, which parts we want to keep flooded and whether to deepen them to make ponds. Really looking forward to working with the land not against it.CoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCool

I seems that you are approaching the whole thing with the right attitude and a great deal of patience.  I admire you both.

I'll try that again!

Thanks again Toffeeapple but it does stem from some experience of watching people come hurtling into this land with a vision to change things and not spend time working with the people or the land. I think in this day and age of instant this and instant that we forget how much can be learnt by observation and care coupled with small steps so if it doesn't work you haven't lost tonnes of investment of time or money.DohDohDoh

Very wise, unlike a couple of friends who moved to Spain and were back again within  two years.

I'll try that again!
