Hi everyone my name is Steve and I'm 43 and from Cardiff, I work full time co-managing a plumbers merchants, and I'm a busy dad of four, when I do get some time to myself I enjoy making jams and preserves etc, I've dipped my big toe into this website before, however, yesterday I started my first marrow rum, I must confess I feel a bit out of my depth with the dark arts of alcoholic beverages so I decided to join up for sanctuary and reassurance.

I enjoy foraging for fruit and I'm lucky as I live on the very edge of Cardiff I have access to an abundance of wild food although I have been a bit disappointed this year with the amount of sloes on my local trees.

take care

Steve

Diolch Toni-Anne, thank you all for the warm welcome, I might be looking for help on the weekend, as I'm going to attempt to make some rosehip syrup which should be fun, instead of sloe gin this year I decided to make bramble whisky, has anyone made this before, how does it taste?

Since a messy Friday night in Cardiff with a rugby match several years ago I've been unable to drink whisky, and I'm hoping the blackberries do something magical to whisky like sloes do to gin.

You could try this one, first posted on the Blog by Fiona in 2007.  Be prepared to let us know how it went, won't you?

I'll try that again!

Hi Steve,

Never tried bramble whisky, I've only done sloe gin and sherry and also strawberry vodka. There was a very short (2 posts!) discussion of bramble whisky on the sloe gin forum and it sounds like it might be good.

A few years ago I had a go at making rosehip syrup. I can't remember where I got the method from (possibly Fiona's blog) and I thought I blogged about it on my site too but I can't find my post (the search on my site seems to be down at the moment and a normal google search didn't find it).

Yeah it does. I might give that a go since I won't be making sloe gin this year. I'll have to remember to save/freeze any orange/tangerine/satsuma peel instead of chucking them on the compost heap.
