Fish – a topic not for the squeamish.

I had this great idea we have so much water on our land we could have a fish pond and apparently carp seem to grow well here. Thought first thing was to try carp and see what I thought, otherwise there is no point. We bought a fresh fish from the side of the road as you do here in Latvia, and they were fresh as some of them were still flapping. Problem is I found out I do have a squeamish point, it is cutting into the fish and finding out it wasn't as dead as I thought it was, kind of mildly freaked me out and had to get hubby to come and manfully deal with it. Now I need to know how to humanely deal with fish to make sure it is really dead before attempting to gut them, so does anyone know how to swiftly kill a fish?

Just knock it on the head, that should do the trick.  Sounds like a great enterprise to start, good luck.

I'll try that again!

I've had the same happen to me – it's a bit off putting isn't it?

Agree with Toffeeapple – a friend who does fishing has a small wooden truncheon for the job  and apparently it's known as a Priest!

Yep thats it; my dad used to go fishing regularly and you hit them hard on the head to kill them; not nice but effective

Though I recently came aross a clip on You Tube that shows live fish being cooked at your table – somewhere in China I believe – though not all were done when the dish was served… (Puking smiley here please!)

I'll try that again!

Must invest in one of those little items, one for the Christmas list I suppose. Lol (Must see if firefox will allow me to add those little smileys, as I haven't worked it out in Safari)

Pint Just tested it in Safari, Joanna, and it works for me. Then again, it is Safari running on a Microsoft/Intel (Wintel) computer, not on a Mac.

Some people try to drag and drop the Smileys into a post. No. All they have to do is click on the Smiley.

Anyway, really pleased that you can add them. That reminds me to go and get some more Frown
