This is a risky topic because the whole area of “making money” or “making money online” is packed with fraudsters and charlatans who just try to sell you an impossible dream, usually with a scheme that is either unworkable or outdated. I know because I have been looking and buying for many years. It is a minefield for the novice and best avoided in general.
However, I do know some guys whom I believe can be trusted. One of them is a bloke from Arkansas named Travis (I forget his last name). He invented an approach that he calls “Bum Marketing” and explains the name as follows:
“My wife (Jeannie) named this the "Bum Marketing Method" because she thinks it is so easy that I could take a bum off the street…take him to the public library…and have him earning cash within a week."
His writing style is down-south folksy but the techniques he promotes are very valid and low-cost or even zero-cost. A good guy.
I am on his mailing list. He recently sent out this simple guide as a Christmas present, with permission to distribute it freely. I have read it and it makes sense. Anybody can make a steady income by doing research on the Internet and writing brief articles about a selected topic. Writing skills are not important, just the ability to search for information using Google, and then write a summary of the main findings.
Download his short guide and judge for yourself. There are many links to his web site within the article.
As always, be advised never to part with your hard cash unless you are satisfied that you will get a refund if the material is not what you expected. This guide is free. Whether or not you buy more stuff from Travis is entirely up to you.

No, Shelley. In order to do article writing, you have to have time, and time is in very short supply here with a full time job and a side line business, plus working to improve this site in my spare time.

However, I do use a site called elance.com for subcontracting some technical tasks that I am not capable of doing myself. I noticed that article writing is a new service being requested by growing numbers of web site owners who want original content. I think that native English speakers have an advantage (better quality) but that is balanced by the lower rates that providers in India etc. can charge.

I think the key to success is to persist until you have two or three clients who will come back to you for more work. That may require persistence and perhaps a little luck, but it is achievable.

Just to see what can be achieved, I decided on the spur of the moment this evening to draft a brief article using the resource of the Internet and Google for raw material. I looked around for a topic (any topic at all, for the purpose of this experiment) and my eye fell upon the Money Tree that sits on my desk.

I decided to allocate no more than 30 minutes to write a brief article about Caring for your Money Tree.

Also, I invented a simple rule - I would use only the 9th link on each Google page. The idea being that a pool of, say, 10 writers, could each only use the 1st, 2nd etc. Google link to help ensure that each article woud be different. That is, if this team received instructions like "I need 10 articles about the subject of xxxxx.

In fact, I got fed up after 20 minutes and was surprised to discover that I had written 300 words (articles need only be 300 to 500 words long). Also, I think I had only visited three or four links from Google.

It is not a particularly erudite or practical article, and in hindsight I guess I sort of cheated because I added some padding based on the fact that I am familiar with the subject. Maybe it makes it a little more readable. But commercial web site owners, who pay money for content, are really only interested in keyword relevancy and feeding the insatiable Google machine to raise their site in the search rankings. They depend on a constant feed of content that relates to their theme so as to attract traffic from Google to buy whatever product their site is focusing on.

If anybody is interested in coming together to build a small pool of writers with time and ability to do this sort of thing, then PM me or use the contact age on the blog to indicate your interest. No commitment required at this point. I just want to see if the idea has support. If so, we may take it forward.

How to care for your Money Tree Plant

The instructions for caring for your Money Tree Plant really depend on where you live and the ambient temperature of the seasons in your locale. Chilly north European climes require mainly indoor planting. If you live in the southern states of the US, northern territories of Australia, or generally warmer places, then outdoors is fine all the year around.

Outdoors, plant in a sunny or almost sunny spot (not in a shady border). The Money Tree Plant likes rich, loose soil. You can achieve that in poorer conditions by adding compost.

Care for it by watering regularly and sparingly. If the leaves begin to turn yellow (especially if planted indoors) that is a warning sign. We pour 1 litre into its pot once every two weeks. That seems to keep it happy.

It is one of most popular of indoor plants, also known as Pachira Glabra,Bombax Glabra,Bombacopsis Glabra, (all a variation on Pachira Aquatica), Bonsai Money Tree, French Peanut, Malabar Chestnut, Guiana Chestnut, Saba Nut or Lucky Money Tree. In N. America it is also known as Lunaria Annua and Honesty, Dollar Plant and Moonwort.

I think ours is Pachira Aquatica because it has a flower with red-ish stamens, while the the Pachira Glabra has a flower with almost white stamens. This I know because a friend who moved house three years ago bequeathed us the specimen that sits on my desk beneath the velux window in our dormer roof. We put it outside on our pond-side garden table for the warmer summer months and it thrived. Once the chilly days of October arrived it was repatriated indoors on my desk

Luckily, it is classified amongst "safe" plants that have no known systemic effects on animals or as not having intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Perfect for domestic decor.

This sounds interesting Danny, but I am probably like a lot of people, in not trusting their own ability to write what is required.

Who would pay for my work?

Why would anyone want to know what I have to say?

etc etc

I have downloaded the article, and I will spend some time reading it. We'll see.

My pleasure Brightsprite!

I agree Shelley - there's loads of information in that article. As I'm not able to work for the foreseeable future we have been looking into ways of generating income from the Internet as well as from our preserves and vegetables (thank you Shelley you gave me that idea). It all takes time but I reckon that it's worth pursuing.

Danny I like the idea and I'm reading up on it now, very interested but as with others not sure of my ability yet, but I show interest in your idea of a writing pool.

Thanks for considering it, Tascar. A pool of natural English speaking people would be attractive to potential buyers but only if we could regularly deliver a bundle of 10, 20 or 25 articles for a given topic. It's really a matter of available time rather than writing skill. We are not aiming for scintillating writing style, just a readable bit of prose that relates well to the main topic.

Also, it would have to pay reasonably well to make it worthwhile. But. if the bundle can be sold 10 times over, say, then that should be possible once we gain a reputation and clientele.

I wonder if I'd be good enough to join in?

I'll try that again!

I am certain that you would, TA.

We just need enough people who will give it a go. Even three or four might be enough to begin with.

I will sound out some prospects and report back on the results. It may take a week or more but let's see what the potential really is.

Thank you for your thoughts. Eeek  Nothing has happened on this post for a month or so, therefore a few more weeks won't make any difference. Cheers

I'll try that again!

Gidday

Well I am just a rough country Kiwi boy but this subject is dear to me heart.  Like because I don't have much money and don't really know how to make much, apart from the fact that if I print any of it down here the law will be after me.

But hey, my problem that is stopping me joining in on this scheme I just caint download that Bum Marketing Method download.
