I want to build aTandir oven in the garden (similar to an igloo shaped pizza oven) but was quoted ridiculous prices. I appreciate that dimensions and materials are crucial to get optimum results but  for the amount that it would be used as an actual oven I am willing to compromise and give it a go

ourselves (me and a local villager who helps) He is going to ask his grandfather for advice. Has anybody had a go at a pizza oven? I have consulted several sites  and have got some ideas.

You might find something on the River Cottage web-site, I was watching something recently where he HFW built one such.

I'll try that again!

Sandy, did you look at Instructables?

Their plan isn't really pretty in my opinion, but maybe it will give you a jumping off point?

If you can't be a shining example, be a terrible warning!

The instructables is a brilliant site - I ended up sourcing stuff from there for a couple of hours - on second thoughts, perhaps I won't go back there !! Big_Laugh

I saw the River Cottage programme Toffee Apple mentions. They built theirs out of river clay in just the way I used to build snow igloos when I was little. I think they built it on a concrete slab base.

This guy wrote a blog about his oven building experiences after being an a River Cottage course: http://clayoven.wordpress.com/

Yes thats the one I found and have bookmarked. Will start the search for clay tomorrow, I suspect that will be my stumbling block, there are many words for soil types but I have not been able to find one that they will understand correctly...imagination required tomorrow.

I have been pondering all night on this oven. I have decided not to use sand as the dome form ( our sand here is grey and does not stick together well for sand castles) I am going to use an old pilates ball which I shall be able to deflate once the clay is dry.

I have several sizes of these balls from 34 years ago when I used them to treat CP children and they now are being banded about as being a recent thing Roll_Eyes

Do you not have a local pottery? I think you will find they usually have a local source of clay and maybe you could buy it off them. We have plenty of the stuff, and I was thinking of building one too, so I will be interested to know how yours turns out.Whistle

That's another great site Shereen, not just for the oven either...

I'll try that again!

Shereen - at a very wild guess, slow roast lamb is the furthest thing from TA's mind when she ogles that site!

(OK - I know that you know too, but somebody had to point it out! Roll_Eyes )

I'm far too much of a lady to make a suggestion like that.
