It was always called French Toast in my family, but G's side of things call it Eggy Bread. I maintain it's yet another difference between townies (Belfast folk, like G) and culchies (small town country folk, like me) in Norn Iron 🙂

Egg in the hole is great too. Fry one side of thick slice of bread with hole cut out of middle with small pastry cutter. Flip and put egg into hole and fry.

WaveOh Sandy everybody thinks I am crazy because I love French  Toast with sugar on top.  It is so delicious.  Love the idea of lemon juice too.

How funny is that, Shereen? Even in the wilds of bog country in West Cork we also called it French Toast. Inverted snobbery?

No, I don't think so, but is a micro socio-economic fact!

How do you fry your bread, Sandy?

Danuta - I think that you are already a convert, although lemon juice may be a bit too poncy for us southerners! Big_Laugh

Fry the bread in bacon fat if it is part of a breakfast or olive oil if a lunch.

I grew up with French Toast meaning bread soaked in egg, milk, and sugar, then fried in butter and served with butter and maple syrup. (Middle west of US) I remember making it myself from a child's cook book, and finding that recipe too sweet! Now I soak bread in egg, maybe with a very little water, and eat in fingers as is for a quick sustaining breakfast, or with maple syrup for a slow Sunday breakfast/brunch.
