Well . . . that was done specifically to give you all a night off!

sorry

I couldn't figure out how to repair it last night. Asked for tech help from the hosts but that was pretty hopeless. In fairness, they have no obligation to fix software problems, just server faults and network issues.

This morning, the answer rang clear as a bell in my head.

dohWonderful what a few hours sleep can do.

I have only just realised all is resolved & we are returning to normal.....I was so busy cooking I didn't even try the forum. It was only when I looked on facebook I saw all was well so I rushed over to say Hi. I loathe facebook ......it is a mess. It is like fighting your way through a sticky, mucky jungle without a compass & with nasty things rearing up in front of you all the time. I can now see why so many people leave after a while ......Grrrrh !!  monster

So am I the only one to have a very wide page on login, the same when replying to a post but then it shrinks after posting the reply?

Hattie, when you say about Facebook and things rearing up in front of you, do you mean the adverts?  If so you can install a free Ad Blocker.  If you Google adblock and your browser name it will come up and you can install it in seconds.  I don't get ads anymore and I did the same thing for Do Not Track Plus you can stop companies tracking your every movement, including Facebook.  The best company for this service is Abine.com and again, is free.

I'll try that again!

Thanks TA, I will have a go at those. Actually It a lot of my annoyance is the quality of communications, or rather, the lack of it. I am obviously turning into a very grumpy old woman. People seem to have a lot of spare time that they can write such rubbish. They often appear to be at work (but obviously not working)...what must their concentration be like...?  whistle eeek

So nice to know I'm not the only one who loathes the absolute drivel that appears on FB. I have to say my own darling daughter is often guilty of this and I am always moaning to her about it. She is a highly intelligent 40 something with absolutely no excuses for writing such inane rubbish but she does so on a regular basis along with a whole group of 'friends'. The even say when they are going to bed steam what is wrong with them?

Anyway.....and breathe peace

I only go on there from time to time to catch up with friends who live overseas and my all my many Irish relatives but I really miss the lovely letters I used to get and enjoyed writing. Sadly no one bothers any more so I gave up.

Apologies to Danny ....this has gone very slightly OFF TOPIC whistle

Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.

Hattie, don't forget to add them to your old laptop too, if you will be using it to access websites.  I use my old one when I am feeling strong enough to sit on the chair in the east room. That one is also connected to my printer.

I'll try that again!

Also, install them for each browser that you use on each machine - I've done it for Chrome and Firefox on both of mine.

I'll try that again!

No worries, Nadine and Maura - I am not a fan of FB either. But it has become an essential tool for Fiona. Google wants people to use the "social media".

I do understand its attraction. It becomes your site, effectively, your interface with the world. I guess we have CSH, If we did not then no doubt we would use FB far more.

But I agree about the quality of most of the content, or rather the lack of it.

Like many things one does not care for, you do not have to do FB if you don't want to.

Having said that, we have friends across the globe and it is useful to just drop in on their FB page now and again to see if anything exciting has happened in their lives.

Well, this episode was the equivalent of open heart surgery by a butcher's apprentice (me).

I am stunned that it's all hanging together. There was a lot of trial and error but also much I had learned recently. But they say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

However, on the positive side, I was really impressed by the speed of the support staff at our new hosts. Like 15 minutes or less after I raised a ticket. And I raised four or five from about six pm until after midnight. Not technical issues but stupid mistakes by me, such as ordering the wrong server package initially, then screwing up my password in the first five minutes and so on!

Let's see how things go but these people are in a different league compared with our last two providers. Or last three if you count the outfit who took over our previous hosts. That gives us a good deal of confidence that we may have found a home for the foreseeable future, like several years at least.

As always, please point out any glitches here in this thread please.

The only thing that I can see at the moment is that it continues to open up to the full screen when typing a post or a reply then goes back to narrow (my favourite) after posting.  I think the parasol A has disappeared as has the embedded links to the blog.  Oh, and that blasted timer at top left.

I'll try that again!
