OK, everybody, so many of you have reported that this site very often loads unacceptably slowly that I need to rapidly identify the cause.

One problem is that it works really fine for me but I have no idea why your experience is so different.

So we will do some experiments.

#1 is to disable or remove some add-on packages that add some extra functionality. These are called WordPress plugins and we have maybe 20+ running on the site.

I am now disabling the first one. Lets give it a few days and see if it makes a difference.

There is an add-on for FireFox (and possibly Chrome, Safari IE, etc.) called Y-Slow by Yahoo. It sits in the status bar at the bottom of your browser in the right-hand corner.

The time it takes to load a page appears there after the page has loaded.

I discovered a caching technique for the emoticons and other objects that are loaded behind the scenes on every forum page load. That has made an appreciable difference.

Pages should now load between 4 and 8 seconds, depending on the contents (the entire forum view, a single forum view, a topic view, a post view etc.)

I see there are four or five items that are still slow and I will look at those this evening.

Ideally I would like to see the average time drop to under three seconds.

I've just googled that Y-slow and it looks useful.....except that it's not yet available for IE, which is what I use cry (yes I know I could change to Firefox, Chrome, etc., but I'm a complete numpty when it comes to puter techie stuff, and I don't like change, so prefer to stick with what I am familiar with).

To be honest (that really is a ridiculous expression, it kind of hints that you're not honest the rest of the time! eeek), I think the slowness of page loading could possibly be more to do with my crappy laptop, as I don't have so much of a problem with it on my desktop puter.  Unfortunately, my desktop is chronically ill - yet again angry - and is awaiting collection and giving a good seeing-to by my long-suffering clever puter whizzkid friend.........*sigh*

A vast amount of rubbish builds up on our computers, Sue. I clear my browsing history and cache every two weeks or so.

Sometimes, Fiona complains that she is unable to access the Internet. A simple re-boot solves that problem.

However, judging my number of observations regarding slowness of the site from far and wide, there is a more basic issue at play on our server end of things.

The only thing I seem to have problems with are the 'New Recently added' drop downs.  They don't seem to do their stuff first time around and then I get 'Done but with errors on the page' and I'm in the same thread.   As for speed...you're obviously peddling faster.....big_laughbig_laugh and I'm careful how I type that....whistlewhistle

The peddling meddler is going to do some tests over the next hour or so, which may impact performance temporarily yell

Shouldn't that be pedalling?  Sorry about the advert that starts the film.

I'll try that again!
