Hi everybody,

We need a simple sanity check.

Does this site seem to offer very slow response times occasionally / often?

Every opinion is valuable so please take a few seconds to let us know what you think.

Oh boy, were you reading my mind??  I've just waited 4 minutes to get a post submitted and it is so frustrating!  Sometimes I get thrown off too, not very dignified for a person of my great age.  Monster

I'll try that again!

Fiona seems to suffer the same long delay, TA, when she is putting up her blog posts. This morning, she waited for 3 minutes.

OK - looks like something is seriously wrong. We are paying a big chunk of dosh for a high spec virtual server but, even when there are only 20 people or so on the site, it seems to grind to a halt.

Today, I was looking at equivalent offerings elsewhere, including the US. The latency (delay) from the US is about one tenth of a second, but that would be a joy compared to the current delays.

The trouble is that we do not know if it is our web host or the software we are using. Forums are notoriously demanding of server resources but there are rarely more than 6 to 10 people on here at any one time.

I can honestly say I have never had a problem with either response times or posting.  The longer the post, the longer it takes to be submitted, but I have never waited more than about 10 seconds.  I have never been thrown off either.

I can understand how you get frustrated TA.  When you reach a certain age life is just too busy to be wasting time waiting!!!!  And as for getting thrown off, well really!!  How dare they ( whoever they are )

That's interesting, Danuta. One possibility is the speed and path from our laptops to our server. Our web host always asks us to test that when we question the site's speed.

Isn't it nice when comments arrive in quick succession, like now? It's almost like a chat room. Sort of give a feeling of being in touch Rose

Magic I like it too, just as if we were all in the same room. Magic

I'll try that again!

I think we would have great fun if we all got together in one room-  it would have to be a large room.  Can you imagine all the different chats and topics  that would be discussed - and oh the laughter.   Magic   Magic

So many topics! And wandering from one to another...

Sometimes response times are very slow. I haven't thought about when, or whether it is mostly at busy times of day when my server is s l o w e r.  But posting replies can take a long time. It also seems to take a v e r y long time to load the next page if I have been searching on the site for a recipe or a particular topic--so much that at times I give up, much as I hate to admit it.

I don't find this any slower than any of the other forums I visit, and the blog loads quickly.  I rarely get problems of any sort here, unlike FB and LJ, which my Firefox often refuses to load at all.

I don't find the site very slow, some pages take time to load but most load very fast. Question if you are on ADSL why not host the site yourself?

I find it has been getting slower. I think also if someone is posting when i try to enter, I sometimes find I cannot get in, which is a bit frustrating.  It seems a little more reliable on google chrome, than on internet explorer, but not much.

ooh, no, whatever you do, *don't* do that! It would be far slower. The A in ADSL stands for asymmetric. That means outgoing bits go much slower than incoming ones (typically 512kbits, or even as little as 256k, compared to say 8Mbits outgoing). For normal surfing this is fine, because you receive more than you send, but for hosting a busy site ... just don't go there. It would slow your connection to a crawl, rile your ISP, introduce lots of security issues, and require you to be on 24-hour callout to fix server crashes.

I've lost posts a couple of times when the server has failed to respond, but usually it seems OK. I don't know what the specs of your server are, but 20 people doesn't seem like many to bring the server to a standstill. It sounds as if it might need tuning, or more resources adding to it.

There, I've outed myself. You didn't know I was a geek, did you? 😉

Yes things you find out about people.

21963 hits per day, 1995 hits per hour.

No security issues as I control what happens, 24/7 cover - I live here and other than when I'm asleep what's the problem?

PC is dual processor, 4GB ram and 1.6TB storage, hosting web site on XAMPP , also FTP site, processors runs at 5%, max 60% when my weather station updates the internet for a fraction of a second.

What do you think your remote web service runs on? ADSL? Apache? windows? Linux? The connection is ADSL it's a matter of loading.

So yes things you find out about people and these so called geeks.
