Cor, 18 years ago... we used to go sledging on Warren Hill... down the side towards the Cheveley Road because it was steeper!

Happy Days ... thanks for reminding me :)

Hi Fiona

Goodness, we do pay high social security charges in France, but our local taxes (equivalent of rates etc.) and water charges are *far* lower than yours. Yet local councils seem to have more resources to provide services than they do in the UK. £3,000 is horrific!

We've experienced two periods of severe weather conditions since we moved here -- massive flooding in 1999 (26 people killed in our area) -- and hurricane Klaus a couple of weeks ago, which left a lot of roads blocked with fallen trees and millions of people without electricity. In both cases the bloated French state immediately threw resources into helping people, providing emergency generators etc., with troops and the fire brigade coming into affected areas from all over the country within hours.

So maybe the French are better at crises -- but when it's virtually the whole country that's affected, as in the UK, evidently scarce resources are going to be stretched thin, and probably supplies of salt are something it's easy to cut from budgets in favour of something else.

I can see that something like this could be the last straw for struggling businesses. I hope the weather improves soon and you can all get back to normal.

I also hope the many children who played in deep snow for the first time don't forget the magic of it though!
