Years ago when we needed an Alsatian as the deer poachers were getting rather threatening we were offered a rehome one. Then we were offered another that needed a new home. Both for perfectly good reasons. I have always been glad that we had them both. The first one was our original Heidi, and she had the same bloodlines as our very first ever dog, Susie. She smelled the same.

Heidi was a "small sherry in the saloon bar" and the other one, Shona, was "too many gins in the public, and in danger of falling off her stool" Shona decided she was my dog, and devoted her life to caring for me and my children.

I used to worry that we had taken on too much, with the gundogs as well, but there was no way we could choose between them - they were both meant.

So you will know, when you have had a little time with them both. Try and make it an instinct decision. They tend to be the right ones.wave

Oh, what a wonderful quandry!

I agree, you'll know when you see Shuna whether she's yours or not. I'm giving her my vote, I think she needs you. My dear Lucy was a failed gundog - afraid of loud bangs - and she was the most wonderful companion.

Happy choosing day tomorrow! smile

wave  Well what a morning that was, but the result is I seem to have fallen in love with a little black labrador called Shuna!!!!  smile smile smile smile smile smile    She is so beautiful and so like her mum, yet not too close as to upset me.  She was obedient and very calm.  I took her for a wee walk and she came with me happily and did not pull on the lead.  She is just three years old.  What a credit to her Mum she is.

The puppies are no more pure labs than flee in the air!!!!!!   The one he wanted me to have is a black bitch with a very small bit of white on its chin and of course it was adorable.  No eyes open yet, but very sweet.  It was only when I asked him to bring out the dog that was sold that I realised they were not pure bred.  He admitted he did not know who had fathered them then and when I saw the other two, they had lots of splashes of white on them.

So what is going to happen next?  I am going back in a fortnight for two reasons.  Firstly to see the pups when they are a bit bigger and make a definite decision before he advertises, and secondly,  and most  importantly, to bring Shuna over to Colintraive to see how she gets on here.  So yes, Ben does have a say in the decision. smile  I think the main things are to see if she settles and if she does not want to jump the fence to chase sheep.  I am so excited about seeing her again already and really hope it all works out.  I would love to give Midge's pup a new home.  big_hug

I had 2 GSDs from pups before I took Kito, a rescue collie/GSD cross at 18 months. He was very hard work, and still is, but knowing how much happier he is now than the first time I saw him is worth all the hard work. I doubt I will ever take a pup again after seeing the difference I can make to an unwanted dog's life. Good luck, hun, let your good heart guide you.

wave  Thanks Lyn.  I have more or less decided not to take a pup.  I think Shuna and Ben will need lots of attention and I certainly want Shuna to feel loved and wanted.  I am so worried that the guy will change his mind and am tempted to try and get her next week.  I know I will have her for two weeks then if it does not work out, but it would give her a real chance.  Actually, I really believe she will fit in well, once she gets used to us.  smile
