I really do hate to be a downer, BUT, I just heard about a website that was put up to put the magnitude of the oil spill into perspective.
It allows you to put in an location, and the site will impose a image over the location so you can have a better perspective of how truly big it is.
I was horrified.
If you can't be a shining example, be a terrible warning!
That really is good news, Michelle. Let's hope it takes properly and that there are no other nasty surprises in store. The alternatives that Mutley pointed out do not bear thinking about

Well Michelle, I hope the cap works this time. I must be honest and say I had no idea how big it really was, but when I put it over Scotland, I too was horrified.
Old teachers never die, they just lose their class
And just to add to the !! about the mess we can make of the world, have a look at this BBC article which compares the Deepwater Horizon spill with other spills:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8664684.stm
The numbers will have changed since May, but it's still food for thought.
I think maybe it is bigger than all of those, Sheren. We do not have definitive data but 50,000 barrels per day seems to be a reasonably conservative guess.
1 tonne = 7.2 barrels
Approx 3 months since 20-Apr, say 90 days
@ say 50,000 barrels/day
= 50,000 x 90 / 7.2
= 625,000 tonnes, give or take
That BBC link from late May showed the previous known biggest one as Ixtoc 1 in 1979 at 476,000 tonnes

Danny, have you ever been to Wembley?
Parts of it could readily be the epicentre of a toxic flood....

Bit like Slough, then .......
According to John Betjeman:
Come friendly bombs and fall on Slough!
It isn't fit for humans now,
There isn't grass to graze a cow.
Swarm over, Death!
etc
The cap is only temp only and it is only the small leak. some intresting link too. I read between the lines, some is fear mongering and some is true.
