I am afraid the directive was passed by the EU so as from May 1st many herbal medicine products can no longer be sold legally in Europe.

Dear Cottage Smallholder
I noticed that the Avaaz petition has been posted and signed by many of your forum members and thought I would send you further information for your members.
The Avaaz petition rightly is opposed to THMPD an EU Directive, enacted into UK law in 2005 with a 6 year transition period. THMPD concerns herbal medicines sold in a shop situation.
Our campaign above opposes THMPD but also further proposals to change the herbal medicine laws and statutorily Regulate Herbalists.
Please visit our website where you will find further information and can sign our petition.
Thank you
Chris

Never knowingly underfed
was it you who posted this suggestion a while ago? I have been using it, and it helps, so many thanks! (Me too, not officially IBS, but probably that.) I am avoiding wheat and gluten in general at the moment, and it helps a lot.
I love making bread and coffee cake (US), and I am finding the withdrawal from that very hard, harder than avoiding eating things made from wheat. I have a couple of new bread books I have not used--yet, I hope I will be able to tolerate a little eventually.

It may have been me, Barbara, because I have been taking fennel tea for a while now.
I also have been wondering about bread as a possible culprit, so at the moment trying to eat salads (not difficult in this heat!) without meat, bread or potatoes. (Not sure how long I can last, as I love bread and potatoes)
Bread and potatoes (carbohydrates) need the enzyme amylase to break down the starch - if this is insufficient it can lead to bloating and cramps, which could be the cause in my case .... who knows?
