Reading should be on  everyone's visit list, we have the following highlights...

  • The old Gas Works, now just a couple of gas holders by the canal.
  • The Dee Road housing estate (they managed to reduce the number of reported crimes down to only 1 a day last year).
  • The new M4 Junction 11.
  • Western Elms Avenue night life (until the police move the ladies on).
  • Reading's bus station, Now sadly vacant as they moved it away from the Rail station to a roundabout at a miles-out-of-town Hyper Market. Now you need a long bus trip to get to a long bus trip.
  • Any one of Tesco's eleven stores or LIdl's three stores.
  • Whitley (Chav City). Where a mum can become a Gran at 28.
  • Cemetery Junction. Apparently the South UK's worst junction during rush hour.

Not much change there then  rush hour at the junction  best spent in the Marquis  or the Jack. Not been the same since trolley buses. Do they still jump of the flats at Whitley ? ('cos they've been on the nest so long they think they can fly !

I lived in Reading environs for 23 years - and I have to confess that this junction is something else - it'll take me a while to find my way around it !!!!!

(PS - your other comments, Simon, are part of the reasons for us now living in Wiltshire !whistle big_laugh)

Actually the new designed/improved M4J11 actually works. It looks daunting but if you watch whats going on and keep your head you'll be through far quicker than you ever were.

The Jack [of both sides] is now the Abbot Cook, but not before becoming the UpIn Arms. Apparently a gastro pub by the looks of it. The Jack as it was used to get raided regularly by the drugs squad.

The Marquis is now one of Reading's gay bars. I wonder if it still has the one person dance stage with its stripper pole. 🙂

I have been through it twice since it was rebuilt, Simon. Both times I made two circuits trying to find the exit for the eastbound M4! But the tailbacks coming out of Reading have diminished considerably I think.

Laughing quite loudly at the descriptions of Reading, since that's where the office Dan's boss works from is located¦.

Is it as good as that 'wonderful' roundabout in Swindon? Whoever invented that one must have been high as a kite at the time!

See what you have started, Simon? Dan's UK office is in Green Park. My corporate headquarters is there too (different IT outfit).

Oh Hell. Don't get me started on that carbuncle on Swindon's face, The Magic Roundabout. Whoever designed that needs taking outside and shooting.

I need therapy after every time I use it , scares me witless it does. I think I'm having a relapse just thinking about it.

Another attraction for Reading¦

Its own ring road, the infamous IDR. Just put Reading IDR into your favourite search engine and watch it go ballistic.steam Talking Heads even wrote a song about it.

Hi Wifey,

You definitely sound like you were still on cold meds. You sounded much better tonight on the phone smile

Michelle speaks the truth: My boss, Simon, works out of Symantec's Reading office in the UK. I haven't read all the posts yet on this thread but ... should I be worried about visiting the boss man in Reading? smile

Maybe I should wait until after my annual review to decide if I should visit Simon while we are on vacation smile I mean if he hates me, I do not think he will want to spend time with me smile

Wave hello to Williams, AZ when you drive by! I am missing out on another train trip. This time on the Grand Canyon Railway.

From my short time on this forum I have come to the conclusion you couldn't hate anybody here, such a nice lot.

Reading does have at least one redeeming feature - the bus that runs from the train station to Green Park. Cheap-ish and frequent. In fact, my company has banned the use of taxis on that route and everyone must use the bus.

Simon, you know that wind turbine near the Madejski Stadium - who owns it and what systems does it feed into. Any idea?

Speaking of which, I really like staying at the Madejski Hotel too. For um as are not familiar with the name, linky to JM's Wikipedia page
